Severe dental attrition has several causes but may be the result of bruxism in neurological or psychological disturbances. Rett's syndrome is an uncommon but increasingly recognised neurological disorder, characterised by acquired microcephaly, progressive dementia, bruxism, and loss of purposeful movements of the hands. A patient with Rett's syndrome who demonstrated masseteric hypertrophy, bruxism, and severe attrition is reported.
A 55-year-old man developed clicking of his teeth, involuntary biting, chewing and grimacing within three days of initiation of flecainide. We suggest flecainide should be added to the list of benzamide derivatives associated with drug-induced movement disorders.
We report here a new case of oculomasticatory syndrome related to systemic Whipple's disease. The patient presented typical ophthalmoparesis associated with ocular myorhythmia consisting of 1 Hz convergent oscillations of both eyes. The masticatory involvement was remarkable and consisted of a permanent bruxism leading to severe tooth abrasions. Possible pathophysiology of such a disorder is discussed.
