Abstract

Why are there eye movements? To shift images across the retina. There is a system for fast centering of an image on the retina, a system for tracking a slowly moving image, and a vestibular system for maintaining the same field of view. How is the perception of the visual world rendered stable in the face of all these eye movements and yet the movement of particular objects within the environment is accurately seen?

Benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo: a disease explainable by inner ear mechanics.

Many arguments give evidence that benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo, one of the most frequent kinds of vertigo, can be reduced to mechanical processes in the vestibular part of the labyrinth. Based on the assumption that otoliths have departed from their normally fixed position in the otolithic membrane and travel in the semicircular canals, clinical observations find their explanation. Latency between the onset of a head movement and the beginning of the vertiginous sensation, its duration and the nystagmic pattern provoked by specific head movements are in good correlation with the canalith hypothesis. Further arguments are the successful treatment by liberatory maneuvers, the relatively high number of recurrences and the change of the affected canal.

Hearing preservation after classical translabyrinthine removal of a vestibular schwannoma: case report and literature review.

The translabyrinthine approach is one of the favoured access routes for removal of vestibular schwannomas; however, total hearing loss in the operated ear is a predictable consequence. Here, we report a case in which a patient maintained serviceable hearing almost six years after classic translabyrinthine surgery. Possible explanations for the hearing preservation are discussed, as well as the feasibility of a modified translabyrinthine approach in attempting preservation of hearing following vestibular schwannoma surgery.

[Effects of noise on inner ear].

The effects of noise on health depend both on individual factors and characteristics of sound exposure. In case of acoustic trauma, reversible or irreversible lesions of inner ear components are possible. Most often there is immediately an acute tinnitus and hearing loss. Audiometric tests demonstrate hearing loss on the high frequency, generally focused on 4 kHz. Immediate treatment is recommended even there is no currently indicator of the ability to restore hearing. New perspectives on treatment are directed to local treatment and/or using new procedure as antioxidative treatment. Occupational and leisure are the two conditions in which chronic exposure to noise is found. Detection and prevention of noise-induced hearing loss is easier in case of industrial workers than in case of noise exposition for musicians and other sounds and stage technicians or concert managers, and of course non-professional with exposure to amplified music.
