Abstract

Postoperative follow-up of a Jones tube is simplified by utilizing the fiber optic properties of the pyrex tube. Light directed onto the external tube collar is transmitted to the intranasal end of the tube, causing it to glow and highlight the surrounding intranasal anatomy.

Plasmon resonances in gold-coated tilted fiber Bragg gratings.

The transmission spectrum of fiber Bragg gratings with gratings planes tilted at a small angle (2 degrees -10 degrees) relative to the fiber axis shows a large number of narrowband cladding mode resonances within a 100 nm wide spectrum. When a gold coating with a thickness between 10 and 30 nm is deposited on the fiber, the transmission spectrum shows anomalous features for values of the outside medium refractive index between 1.4211 and 1.4499. These features are shown to correspond to the excitation of surface plasmon resonances at the external surface of the gold film.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) reflectance technology for the determination of tocopherols in alfalfa.

The vitamin E (alpha- and (beta+gamma)-tocopherol) contents present in alfalfa (fresh or dehydrated) were analysed using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technology together with a remote reflectance fibre-optic probe. The range of vitamin E was 0.55-5.16 mg/100 g for alpha-tocopherol and 0.07-0.48 for (beta+gamma)-tocopherol. The regression method employed was modified partial least squares (MPLS). The equations developed using the fibre-optic probe for 69 samples of alfalfa (dehydrated and fresh) to determine the content of vitamin E in feeds had multiple correlation coefficients (RSQs) and prediction corrected standard errors (SEP (C)) of 0.946 and 0.321 mg/100 g for alpha-tocopherol and 0.956 and 0.022 mg/100 g for (beta+gamma)-tocopherol. The predicted values of vitamin E in feeds using NIRS technology applying the fibre-optic probe directly on the sample with neither previous treatment nor manipulation are comparable to those obtained using the chemical method, which included alkaline hydrolysis and hexane extraction of the vitamin from the unsaponifiable fraction before chromatographic determination.

Use of (130)Te(2) for frequency referencing and active stabilisation of a violet extended cavity diode laser.

This paper reports on the use of (130)Te(2) absorption lines in active laser-locking, and in frequency referencing, of the emission of a violet extended cavity diode laser with a wavelength of around 410 nm. We note the existence of closely spaced tellurium absorption lines, suitable for referencing purposes in gas sensing applications, at wavelengths below the lower limit (417 nm) of the spectral region covered by the tellurium atlas [J. Cariou, P. Luc, Atlas du spectre d'Absorption de la Molecule de Tellure, CNRS, Paris, 1980]. The absolute positions of the lines in the acquired spectra were estimated by comparison to a simultaneously acquired fluorescence spectrum of atomic indium, and were identified using calculations based on fundamental spectroscopic data. The laser frequency was stabilised within a range of 40 MHz, which is negligible compared to typical transition widths at atmospheric pressure.
