The time course of spontaneous otoacoustic emissions.

Spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) are amplitude-modulated pure sinus tones. The character of the sinus tone, which is a rare phenomenon in nature, can be proven by resolving the shifts and drifts that more or less always occur. In this report amplitude modulation was studied by digital filtering. The SOAEs were composed of bursts which, in small emissions, appeared only a part of the time. This procedure is not only suited for studying SOAEs but also for demonstrating evoked emissions, even without averaging.

Corneal autoimmunity in a patient with relapsing polychondritis.

We report our experiences with a patient with relapsing polychondritis, in whom circulating antibodies against corneal epithelium were determined by immunofluorescence before and after medical treatment. The results provide further evidence for an autoimmune pathogenesis of the disease.

Perceptive bilateral deafness following clinical tetanus to a neonate.

A rare case of bilateral perceptive deafness following clinical tetanus is reported. The patient was a 15-day-old neonate. The clinical tetanus was treated with tetanus antitoxin (human gamma globulins) and penicillin. The exact mechanism of auditory nerve damage associated clinical tetanus and treatment with human tetanus antitoxin and penicillin is still not clearly known. We believe that the damage of the hearing organ can be attributed to the tetanus toxin and not to the human gamma globulins (tetanus antitoxin).
