A model for direction selectivity in threshold motion perception.

Abstract

Thresholds were measured for a moving line superimposed on moving sinusoidal gratings. When line and grating moved in the same direction significant subthreshold summation was observed over a range of spatial frequencies. For motion of the line and grating in opposite directions, summation was never observed. This supports the hypothesis that direction selective mechanisms are responsible for motion perception at threshold. Further analysis of the data produced estimates of the spatial frequency tuning of these mechanisms. A quantitative model is proposed to interpret the data, and it is suggested that flickering gratings are not decomposed into their moving components by the visual system.

Nursing models in a special hospital: cybernetics, hyperreality and beyond.

Two emerging themes that resulted from research carried out in a special hospital on the use of nursing models are identified. The first theme to emerge was the tendency of the subjects to perceive the models as concrete entities thus undergoing a process of reification. The second theme identified was the adherence to the models outside the contextual nature of the setting which limited their effectiveness. A theoretical framework in which to locate the results of the study is explored using cybernetic learning theory and the notion of hyperreality, using the works of Jean Baudrillard. A method for innovation and changing practice in the special hospital setting is suggested.

Theoretical considerations on the rehabilitation process.

In the present work some of the theoretical aspects which qualifies the rehabilitation process are pointed out. The context of rehabilitation should include the social network. The isomorphism between the rehabilitation process and the Batesonian concept of mind like "the pattern which connects" is as well emphasized. In this sense the rehabilitation (as the Batesonian mind) is a process imminent in the various contexts the patients deal with and elaborates the differences between these contexts. According to this view it is useful to refer to the Second Cybernetic epistemological model: the structural coupling between therapeutic system, family and social network is the goal of rehabilitation.
