The jugular foramen was examined in 300 Anatolian skulls from the 17th and 18th centuries. In 61.6% the foramen was larger on the right and in 26% on the left, with the remainder being of almost equal size. An obvious dome caused by a superior jugular bulb was present bilaterally in 49%, on the right only in 36%, on the left only in 6%; it was absent bilaterally in 10.3%. Complete bony septation occurred in 5.6% on the right and in 4.3% on the left, partial septation was observed in 2.6% on the right and in 19.6% on the left. Another foramen which is completely separated by a spicule of bone and which transmits the inferior petrosal sinus was present in 5.6% of skulls on the right and in 4.6% on the left.
Using acoustic analysis techniques, Waldstein [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 88, 2099-2114 (1990] reported abnormal speech findings in postlingual deaf speakers. She interpreted her findings to suggest that auditory feedback is important in motor speech control. However, it is argued here that Waldstein's interpretation may be unwarranted without addressing the possibility of neurologic deficits (e.g., dysarthria) as confounding (or even primary) causes of the abnormal speech in her subjects.
In order to offer anatomical basis that aid for clinical interpretation of headache of cervical origin a macro-mesoscopic study of greater occipital nerve and its subcutaneous rise out site was accomplished. The authors observed that in its course this nerve delineates angles and direction shifts that can stand for critical points in etiology of occipital pain, so that in its subcutaneous rise out region both occipital artery and vein shape the vasculo-nervous bundle wrapped by sheath of fibrous connective tissue which has continuity and contiguity relation with the adjoining epimysium and perimysium. From our results, anatomo-clinical aspects are discussed.
