Pulse frequency modulation in neural systems. A random model.

Abstract

A model is proposed of the pulse frequency modulation process in those neural systems where the neuron discharge is random. The model is characterized by one property, namely input-invariance of the output random process after a time transformation, which, on the one hand, greatly simplifies its analytical treatment, and on the other hand, gives a tool to determine experimentally whether the model describes the external behavior of a given neural system. The main dynamical properties of the model are studied, and the relevance of the results to information transmission by neural systems is discussed.

A simple method to verify in vivo the accuracy of target coordinates in linear accelerator radiosurgery.

PURPOSE: A simple method that verifies the coincidence of the isocenter with the center of the target volume in radiosurgery treatment conditions is described. The accuracy is compared to that of accepted computerized procedures employing fiducial markers. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The center of the beam is identified by a cylindrical localizer, fixed to the plate of the supplemental collimator, with a 2 x 50 mm tungsten rod coincident with the beam axis and is projected onto the x-ray portal verification films. Prior to irradiation, the coordinates of the intersection of the beams axes, which is in a known spatial relationship with the isocenter, are read directly on portal x-ray films and their coincidence with the coordinates set during patient positioning, is checked. RESULTS: The mean displacement in AP, Lat, and Vert coordinates respectively, over 84 patients, between the coordinates calculated by the computerized procedure employing fiducial markers and the coordinates calculated by using the rulers was 0.3 +/- 0.4 mm. CONCLUSIONS: From the results obtained with the two methods we can conclude that rulers method can be used as a fast indirect control of the position of the radiation isocenter. Moreover, the dimensions of the radiation field and the correct alignment of the tertiary circular collimator can be also documented.

A simple approach to analyzing protein side-chain dynamics from 13C NMR relaxation data.

A simple approach to deriving motional dynamics information of protein and peptide side chains by using 13C NMR relaxation data is presented. By using linear approximation of internal rotational correlation functions, simple equations for relating side-chain conformation, bond rotational amplitudes, and rotational correlation coefficients with different NMR relaxation parameters have been obtained. Auto- and cross-correlation spectral densities are considered, and it is shown that proton-coupled 13C NMR relaxation measurements allow detailed motional information to be obtained.

A procedure for generating locally identifiable reparameterisations of unidentifiable non-linear systems by the similarity transformation approach.

A method is presented for the generation of locally identifiable reparameterisations of non-linear systems which have been shown to be unidentifiable via application of the similarity transformation approach. The existence of the reparameterised system in terms of the maximum permissible number of locally identifiable parameters is provided and is crucially dependent upon the ability to find the rank deficiency of an appropriate (and possibly infinite) jacobian matrix. The reparameterisation procedure is described in detail, and is illustrated with application to two known non-trivial examples of unidentifiable non-linear systems.
