Statistical analysis of method comparison data. Testing normality.

Abstract

A Lilliefors test of normality has been applied to data from precision and accuracy studies. Most data sets tested as non-normal. Simulation studies showed that the test is extremely sensitive to the rounded, narrowly distributed data that are typical of method performance studies in clinical chemistry. The Lilliefors test can be modified to be applicable to rounded data so that it gives fewer indications of non-normality. The authors conclude that the selection of a test of normality requires careful study of the properties of the test. Otherwise, the subsequent choice between parametric and nonparametric statistics may not be meaningful.

[Historical aspects of clinical enzymology].

The field of clinical enzymology has markedly progressed in recent years. Diagnostic enzymology, therapeutic enzymology and enzymes as analytical reagents continue to contribute to the progress of health care. However, there are many aspects of the historical changes that have taken place in this field that are surprisingly unknown. The presentation I am about to give attempts to provide an overview of the history of the development of clinical enzymology and clinical chemistry. I hope it will be of reference to you.

Costs in a clinical pharmacological laboratory.

As a measure of the efficiency of service provided to the Groote Schuur group of hospitals by the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, certain costs were analaysed. The approximate annual cost of routine analytical work was R40 000 $45 000 or 22 000 pounds). The average cost per assy was R9,50 ($11,30 or 5,50 pounds). Closer examination of data showed that the cheapest assays are those done in large batches using an off-line analytical technique such as thin-layer chromatographic densitometry.
