Implants in prosthodontics have come a long way in the last 15 years. General dental practitioners today perform procedures that were once carried out only by highly trained specialists, and the subject is now taught to undergraduates in some dental schools. Harold Preiskel looks at the current techniques used in implantology and gives advice from his wealth of first-hand experience.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Edentulous patients who require implant-supported prostheses have diverse jaw anatomy and functional, esthetic, and economic concerns. Four main prosthetic designs have been used to meet these needs. PURPOSE: In this article, the fixed ceramometal, fixed detachable, overdenture, and fixed removable prostheses are discussed with emphasis on indications and limitations. An in-depth diagnosis and informed treatment planning will maximize implant success and patient satisfaction.
In removable partial denture fabrication, the patient's interest usually lies in the improvement of his or her esthetic appearance. Unsightly facial clasps have always been a cosmetic problem with traditional options either expensive or technically difficult. This article describes an alternative for anterior retention that maintains excellent esthetics with a simple approach.
