[Comparative study on the effectiveness of modified Kato's cellophane thick smear and Stoll's dilution egg counting technique for quantitative fecal examination of helminth eggs].

A total of 197 fecal specimens was prepared for quantitative examination of helminth eggs by modified Kato's cellophane thick smear (M.C.T.S.) and Stoll's dilution egg counting technique (D.E.C.T.). The comparative effectiveness of two techniques was evaluated and conversion function was deduced. The average time required for the microscopic examination on one slide by M.C.T.S. was 12.6 minutes and that of D.E.C.T. was 14.6 minutes. M.C.T.S. showed lower false negative rate than D.E.C.T. in light worm burden cases. Functions to convert the counts obtained by M.C.T.S. to E.P.G. by Stoll's dilution egg counting technique were 47.86 x 10(0.87) logM.C.T.S. in A. lumbricoides, 41.69 x 10(0.82) logM.C.T.S. in T. trichiura and 63.10 x 10(0.85) logM.C.T.S. in C. sinensis. It was suggested M.C.T.S. be better than D.E.C.T. for the quantitative examination of intestinal helminthiases such as A. lumbricoides, T. trichiura, and C. sinensis infections even in the cases with low worm burden.

Penetration enhancement across a model membrane by liposomally entrapped drugs using N,N'-diacylcystine as a bilayer lipid.

A liposomal system for percutaneous absorption and transdermal drug delivery was developed and evaluated using a model apparatus connecting two chambers by a membrane. When N,N'-long chain diacyl L-cystine was incorporated into the liposomal bilayer as well as lecithin and cholesterol, liposomally entrapped calcein as the model drug transferred well across the keratin membrane functioning as the skin model.

The migration of propylene glycol, mono-, di-, and triethylene glycols from regenerated cellulose film into food.

Chocolates, boiled sweets, toffees, cakes and meat pies were wrapped in regenerated cellulose films (with or without coatings) that contained various mixtures of glycol softeners and which had been specially formulated for particular food applications. Samples were unwrapped at intervals (up to the end of the usual maximum shelf-life for the food) and analysed for their glycol content. Analysis involved homogenization of the food in hot water, removal of fats with hexane, precipitation of sugars with calcium hydroxide and analysis of the glycols by capillary gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC/FID) after trimethylsilyl (TMS) derivatization. Triethylene glycol was analysed by selected ion monitoring GC/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) as interference problems occurred with the GC/FID approach. The results of the study showed that higher levels of migration occurred for propylene glycol than for triethylene glycol and the presence of a coating reduced the migration of both softeners. Generally, mono- and diethylene glycol levels in the food samples were below 10 mg/kg, although some samples wrapped in polyethylene glycol-softened films contained levels approaching the current statutory limit of 50 mg/kg.
