The natural teeth provide the optimal guide for the correct placement of artificial teeth. A stent is made on the patient's maxillary preextraction diagnostic cast. The stent is transferred to the patient's edentulous maxillary cast to help position the maxillary anterior artificial teeth in the same positions the maxillary natural teeth occupied before extraction.
This technique affords a simplified alternative to more complicated and expensive treatment of periodontically compromised teeth. It provides the patient with an extended-term prosthesis attached to a single or multiple retained canine. A disadvantage of this technique is that poor hygiene may result in caries or further periodontal breakdown. The internal liner of the cemented tube/sleeve will accumulate food particles if the patient does not keep the prosthesis in place during all times of food ingestion and does not periodically irrigate the internal tube/sleeve.
