Surgery for cleft lip and palate is known to have an effect on growth and development of the mid-face. This paper studies the outcomes in 34 consecutive 10-year-old patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate. Clinical observations of the importance of both surgical technique and the influence of cranial base morphology on maxillo-mandibular position are discussed.
A case report of the orthodontic treatment of a female adolescent with a Class I malocclusion, complicated by a significant transverse discrepancy and a high mandibular plane angle, is presented. Early removal of a maxillary right first premolar contributed to a midline discrepancy. Treatment consisted of rapid palatal expansion and extraction of the maxillary left first premolar and the mandibular right and left second premolars. A very acceptable result was achieved despite a demonstrated vertical growth pattern.
A case report is presented of a female adolescent with a Class II, division 1 malocclusion that shows a significant mandibular arch length deficiency. Although the facial balance suggested a nonextraction approach, the degree of mandibular anterior dental crowding and preexisting gingival recession indicated extraction in the mandibular arch might be preferable.
