[Intelligence, its morphological equivalent and their developmental tendency].

Human newborns (birth-6 days) and older infants (14-180 days) were allowed to ingest both urea (0.12-0.24 M) in a mildly sweet diluent and the diluent alone, and multiple measures of responsivity were obtained (relative intake, sucking behavior, and hedonic ratings based on facial expressions and body movements). For newborns, there was no indication of rejection of urea relative to the diluent in measures of intake or sucking behavior; rather, their responses were predominantly controlled by the order of presentation of the two tastes. In contrast, older infants tended to reject all concentrations of urea according to these measures. Hedonic ratings provided an indication of limited rejection of the bitter taste by newborns, but older infants were still found to respond more consistently. These data suggest there is an early developmental change in bitter taste perception.

Rhinoplasty and facial expression.

Based on the philosophical concept that facial beauty is not merely harmony of static anatomical structures but also the dynamic expression of the face (especially when one smiles), I propose that plastic surgeons approach the problem of aesthetic improvement of the human face not only in response but also when the face moves. I call this "surgery of the facial expression." I describe here the use of a new surgical procedure to correct a certain condition with which plastic surgeons are frequently confronted when patients consult and request rhinoplasty. Many patients have added defects that are exposed only when they begin to make facial movements and gestures; moreover, these added defects become even more manifest when they smile. I call this phenomenon "rhino-gingivolabial syndrome of the smile," and describe the technique I have used not only to improve the form of the nose but also to enhance the patient's smile.

Developmental change in infant categorization: the perception of correlations among facial features.

Previous studies indicated that the ability to detect correlations among attributes emerges between 7 and 10 months of age. In the present study, the generality of this developmental transition was examined. Using an infant-control habituation procedure, 48 7- and 10-month-old infants were tested for the perception of correlations among basic facial features. The developmental effects were replicated. Only the 10-month-old infants demonstrated their sensitivity to the pattern of correlation by generalizing to a novel face that preserved the experienced pattern of correlation, while showing increased attention to a face in which the pattern of correlation was violated. 7-month-old infants generalized to both test stimuli containing familiar features, regardless of the status of the correlation. Implications for face perception and the processing of categorical information are discussed.
