In vivo 13C-NMR evaluation of glycogen content in a patient with glycogen storage disease.

Glycogen storage disease was suspected in a 10-month-old boy. Initial technical problems did not permit the determination of the precise enzyme, deficiency, and type VI glycogen storage disease was only diagnosed at the age of 2 years. In the mean time, natural abundance 13C nuclear magnetic resonance evaluation of muscular and hepatic glycogen content indicated normal muscular glycogen and increased hepatic glycogen in our patient, a finding which strongly argued for the diagnosis of type VI glycogen storage disease. Even though the use of nuclear magnetic resonance might seem, in this situation, a somewhat circuitous means of reaching the diagnosis, it appears that nuclear magnetic resonance could provide a useful tool for a non-invasive diagnosis of glycogen storage diseases.

The correlation of serum prolactin level and psychic stress in women undergoing a chronic hemodialysis programme.

Altogether eight women undergoing a chronic hemodialysis treatment were studied for five months. Four of them were in the premenopause and four in the postmenopause. Once a month levels of prolactin, FSH, LH, estradiol and progesterone were measured, Lüscher colour test was performed, from which the screamer index as an indicator of psychic stress was calculated and the levels of urea, creatinine and hematocrite were assessed to inform us of the adequacy of dialysis. We tested the hypothesis, whether there exists a correlation between psychic stress and the prolactin level in these women. For statistic evaluation we used linear regression under the use of dummy variables to intercept the interindividual differences in the Lüscher test. We found that the fluctuation of the prolactin level and of the value of the screamer index of the Lüscher test are parallel (p less than 0.05). These results bear witness of a participation of psychic stress in the onset and level of hyperprolactinemia in women being in a chronic hemodialysis treatment.

Creatine

[A study on creatine uptake into human erythrocytes: relation to erythrocyte aging].

In order to assess the relation between creatine uptake into human erythrocytes and erythrocyte aging, actual influx of creatine into erythrocytes and creatine contents in erythrocytes were measured by using method of high performance liquid chromatography and isotopic estimation of 14C-creatine concentration. Actual influx of creatine into erythrocytes was showed rapidly, in spite of constant contents of erythrocyte creatine under the condition to be incubated at 37 degrees C for approximate 4 hours in isotonic saline containing high concentration of creatine. Km values of the creatine uptake into young erythrocytes were evidently smaller than that into old erythrocytes. On the other hand, no significant difference of Vmax values was observed to be dependent on erythrocyte aging.
