This technique describes a method for making maxillofacial prostheses with tissue undercuts that allows trial closure for esthetic characterization. The finish line is placed on the external eyelid to facilitate final trimming of the prosthesis.
The use of adhesives in retaining maxillofacial prostheses has been advocated and applied for many years. Implant placement has reduced the need for adhesives in some patients but is impractical when ablative surgery is followed by radiation treatment. A technique is described that permits the rapid fabrication of an oculofacial prosthesis that uses naturally occurring orbital undercuts for retention, rather than adhesives that may further irritate radiated tissues.
The authors describe the techniques for subtotal, total and radical orbital exenteration. The aspects of primary and late reconstructive surgery are also discussed, with special reference to Frezzotti's personal technique for temporalis muscle transplantation after subtotal exenteration.
