Capsular polysaccharides of Cryptococcus neoformans.

Abstract

Polysaccharides of Cryptococcus neoformans are considered to have a role in the virulence of this encapsulated fungus. The structure has been determined for the most abundant polysaccharide, a glucuronoxylomannan of varying xylose and ester content. The structural complexity of the capsular material increases from serotype D to A to B to C, but even for the simplest capsule (type D), the immunodeterminants seem to occur only on the side chains. The interactions of some of these groups with antibodies is discussed.

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis: a US perspective.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present article is an update of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. Although a rare condition, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis does affect a number of patients with asthma and cystic fibrosis. Prompt recognition and treatment of the disease is critical to improving patient outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: There is currently much active research being performed in the area of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. Fascinating insights are being made into the pathophysiology and genetics of the disease. Additionally, research is ongoing on the use of recombinant Aspergillus allergens as an aid to the diagnosis of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. SUMMARY: These new insights into the genetics and pathophysiology of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis and the development of these new diagnostic techniques could ultimately lead to improved patient treatment. These areas form an important basis for further research.

Diagnosis of Paracoccidioidomycosis by detection of antigen and antibody in bronchoalveolar lavage fluids.

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a systemic infection caused by the fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis and is believed to be the leading cause of fungal pulmonary infection. In this study, we used an inhibition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to diagnose pulmonary PCM based on the detection of 43-kDa and 70-kDa molecules in bronchoalveolar lavage fluids. The results were compared with results obtained by classical methods for antibody detection.
