The total current of Ca2+ ions through patch-clamped cell membranes was measured while exposing clonal insulin-producing beta-cells (RINm5F) to a combination of DC and AC magnetic fields at so-called cyclotron resonance conditions. Previous experimental evidence supports the theory that a resonant interaction between magnetic fields and organisms can exist. This experiment was designed to test one possible site of interaction: channels in the cell membrane. The transport of Ca2+ ions through the protein channels of the plasma membrane did not show any resonant behavior in the frequency range studied.
We herein present two female siblings with persistent hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia in the neonatal period who were diagnosed as having familial nesidioblastosis. Despite both the administration of diazoxide and the intravenous infusion of glucose, one of the affected infants died of severe metabolic acidosis at about 1 month of age, before pancreatectomy could be performed. The other, in whom the disorder was diagnosed early, also failed to respond to conservative medical treatment and ultimately required a 99% pancreatectomy for control of hypoglycemia. A third female sibling was normal. The possibility of familial nesidioblastosis should thus be considered in the case of neonatal intractable hypoglycemia to ensure a prompt diagnosis and allow for early surgical intervention when indicated. The relevant literature on this life-threatening disorder is also reviewed.
A rare case of Frantz's tumor with liver metastasis is reported. An 11-year-old girl had local resection of a Frantz's tumor in the head of the pancreas. Ten years later, she had a recurrence in the pancreatic head, and two liver metastases were also disclosed at reoperation. Pancreaticoduodenectomy and enucleation of metastatic lesions in the liver were performed. Six years after the second operation, she is well and free of disease. A review of 174 cases of Frantz's tumor disclosed that metastatic disease in the pediatric age group is extremely rare and yet the prognosis is favorable. On the other hand, the outcome in older patients, especially those over 40 years old, is very poor.
