Surgical wound environment.

Abstract

People are the major source of bacterial contamination in the hospital environment, and to control environmental bacteria, the shedding potential of people must be controlled. In a conventional operating room, the more complete the surgical attire worn by everyone in the room, the better the control; i.e., body exhaust equipment for the anesthesiologist and the scrub nurse is essential. The laminar airflow filter system and ultraviolet light are effective environmental controls for preventing wound contamination.

Meralgia paresthetica caused by hip-huggers in a patient with aberrant course of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve.

"Hip-huggers" may be a precipitating factor for meralgia paresthetica (MP), especially in thin persons with an aberrant pathway of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). We describe a 25-year-old woman with a long-standing history of MP caused by an abnormal course of the LFCN and tight trousers, specifically hip-huggers. Ultrasonography was useful for detecting the lesion site and the abnormal pathway of the LFCN. After neurectomy of the LFCN, most of the symptoms of MP were relieved, but mild hypesthesia remained in the lateral thigh.

Radiation and chemical degradation of UVR protection characteristics of fabrics.

Clothing can provide substantial protection against solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and quantifying the amount of protection can have useful applications to recreational, occupational and medical situations. However, exposure of fabrics to sunlight and sea water can alter their physical and chemical properties, resulting in a change of UVR attenuation characteristics. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effects of environmental degradation of fabrics on their UVR protection characteristics. The methodologies applied in this study can be used also for the assessment of protective clothing against occupational exposure.
