[Thiobacillus ferrooxidans pili].

Abstract

The surface structures of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were studied. When growing on a medium containing elemental sulphur, the cells possess peritrichously located filaments (piles) whose diameter varies from 4.5 to 7.0 nm and length, from 0.7 to 3.0 mcm. The cells of T. ferrooxidans do not have piles on a medium with ferrous iron. The physiological role of these structures for thiobacilli is discussed.

Muon implantation of metallocenes: ferrocene.

Muon Spin Relaxation and Avoided Level Crossing (ALC) measurements of ferrocene are reported. The main features observed are five high field resonances in the ALC spectrum at about 3.26, 2.44, 2.04, 1.19 and 1.17 T, for the low-temperature phase at 18 K. The high-temperature phase at 295 K shows that only the last feature shifted down to about 0.49 T and a muon spin relaxation peak at about 0.106 T which approaches zero field when reaching the phase transition temperature of 164 K. A model involving three muoniated radicals, two with muonium addition to the cyclopentadienyl ring and the other to the metal atom, is postulated to rationalise these observations. A theoretical treatment involving spin-orbit coupling is found to be required to understand the Fe-Mu adduct, where an interesting interplay between the ferrocene ring dynamics and the spin-orbit coupling of the unpaired electron is shown to be important. The limiting temperature above which the full effect of spin-orbit interaction is observable in the muSR spectra of ferrocene was estimated to be 584 K. Correlation time for the ring rotation dynamics of the Fe-Mu radical at this temperature is 3.2 ps. Estimated electron g values and the changes in zero-field splittings for this temperature range are also reported.

Myoglobin oxidation in a model system as affected by nonheme iron and iron chelating agents.

A model system was used to study the effect of nonheme iron on myoglobin oxidation at pH 5.6 and pH 7.2 at 23 degrees C. The addition of ferrous iron significantly (p < 0.05) increased the rate of myoglobin oxidation in the absence of lipid, demonstrating that iron promoted myoglobin oxidation independent of the effect of lipid oxidation. The addition of the type II, iron chelating antioxidants sodium tripolyphosphate (at pH 7.2) or milk mineral (at pH 5.6) negated the effect of added iron, slowing oxidation of myoglobin. A clear concentration dependence was seen for iron-stimulated myoglobin oxidation, based on both spectral and visual evidence. Further investigation is needed to determine the possible role for nonheme ferrous iron on myoglobin oxidation in vivo or in meat.

Voltammetry of suspensions of hollow particles with ferrocene-immobilized polyallylamine shells.

Redox-active hollow spheres were prepared through extracting a polystyrene core from the latex particle (PSPAAFc) composed of the core and the polyallylamine shell including ferrocenyl carboxylic amide. The suspension of the hollow spheres showed anodic and cathodic voltammetric peaks, which were nearly reversible and diffusion-controlled. The current was 3 times as large as the current for the suspension of the filled PSPAAFc. This value agreed with the theoretical one evaluated from the diameter (1.28 microm), the number of ferrocenyl moieties per particle, 1.2 x 108, by UV spectroscopy, and the diffusion coefficient obtained from the Stokes-Einstein equation. This fact indicates the reaction of the whole loaded charge, in contrast to the partial charge transfer of PSPAAFc. The dynamic flattening motion was observed to support the reaction of the whole charge.
