Embedded Figures Test performance before and after childbirth.

Abstract

Performance on the Embedded Figures Test was investigated before and after childbirth when biochemical changes are marked. Females comprising a first experimental group were tested in their 38th to 40th week of pregnancy. Their husbands who comprised a male control group were tested concurrently. The females were again tested in the sixth week following delivery. There was a significant (P less than 0.001) test-retest difference in EFT scores. Testing of a second female experimental group, to investigate the possibility of a practice effect, indicated that a factor over and above the practice effect was operating in the scores of the first experimental group.

[The other heart--pictures and thoughts for a farewell].

This is an attempt to draw attention to the demanding and complementary reality of modern medical doctors by confronting cardiology and cordiology (symbolism and mythology of the heart). After a survey of the symbolic and mythological world of the heart, the question of compatibility between the apparently opposing poles of cardiologic curative technology and cardiologic emotionalism is posed. With respect to a comprehensive medicine of tomorrow, it is crucial whether modern doctors will be capable of a two-fold synthesis, namely the harmonious interaction between a rational basic position (raison de la mathématique) and an emotional standpoint (raison du coeur) and the increasing harmony of male and female norms.

[Encounter as therapy].

What are the typical aspects of a therapeutic relation, how does it develop and in what manner might it influence the therapeutic result? Encounter as therapy may open the chance to initiate self regulating forces that seem to be blocked by the 'disease'. The term 'disease' implicates the term 'therapy'. A real encounter demands trust and responsibility, unselfishness and readiness for risks from all persons involved (physicians and/or therapists as well as patients). The opposite terms, lack of trust, lack of responsibility, selfishness and lacking readiness for a risk mark the other side of the encounter, of the process of interaction. Encounter or the process of interaction always take place in time and space while persons define a situation. Rules and roles, patterns and exceptions are further structural characteristics of a situation.
