Pseudothrombocytopenia associated with vasculitis.

Abstract

A patient with pseudothrombocytopenia due to the anticoagulant EDTA is described. The thrombocytopenia was secondary to platelet agglutination and required the presence of EDTA in a critical concentration and the patient's plasma. Both homologous and autologous platelets were affected by this plasma factor in the presence of EDTA. The platelet agglutination was temperature independent and could be prevented by divalent cations. The agglutination phenomenon was irreversible. The platelet count in oxalate, not heparin, and citrate anticoagulated blood was normal. The patient's clinical course was benign and no hemorrhagic complications occurred. We believe this is the first reported case of pseudothrombocytopenia associated with a vasculitis. The diagnosis of this disorder, its implications and the pertinent literature is discussed.

Transport of Sr2+ and SrEDTA2- in partially-saturated and heterogeneous sediments.

Strontium-90 has migrated deep into the unsaturated subsurface beneath leaking storage tanks in the Waste Management Areas (WMA) at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Hanford Reservation. Faster than expected transport of contaminants in the vadose zone is typically attributed to either physical hydrologic processes such as development of preferential flow pathways, or to geochemical processes such as the formation of stable, anionic complexes with organic chelates, e.g., ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). The goal of this paper is to determine whether hydrological processes in the Hanford sediments can influence the geochemistry of the system and hence control transport of Sr(2+) and SrEDTA(2-). The study used batch isotherms, saturated packed column experiments, and an unsaturated transport experiment in an undisturbed core. Isotherms and repacked column experiments suggested that the SrEDTA(2-) complex was unstable in the presence of Hanford sediments, resulting in dissociation and transport of Sr(2+) as a divalent cation. A decrease in sorption with increasing solid:solution ratio for Sr(2+) and SrEDTA(2-) suggested mineral dissolution resulted in competition for sorption sites and the formation of stable aqueous complexes. This was confirmed by detection of MgEDTA(2-), MnEDTA(2-), PbEDTA(2-), and unidentified Sr and Ca complexes. Displacement of Sr(2+) through a partially-saturated undisturbed core resulted in less retardation and more irreversible sorption than was observed in the saturated repacked columns, and model results suggested a significant reservoir (49%) of immobile water was present during transport through the heterogeneous layered sediments. The undisturbed core was subsequently disassembled along distinct bedding planes and subjected to sequential extractions. Strontium was unequally distributed between carbonates (49%), ion exchange sites (37%), and the oxide (14%) fraction. An inverse relationship between mass wetness and Sr suggested that sandy sediments of low water content constituted the immobile flow regime. Our results suggested that the sequestration of Sr(2+) in partially-saturated, heterogeneous sediments was most likely due to the formation of immobile water in drier regions having low hydraulic conductivities.

Treatment of wastewater containing Cu(II)-EDTA using immobilized TiO2/solar light.

The photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) of Cu(II)-ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA), employing immobilized TiO2, under natural sunlight rather than artificial UV light conditions, was investigated at a latitude 38 degrees. The immobilized TiO2 film was prepared using a sol gel process, the crystalline structure of which was identified, by X-ray diffraction analysis, as a mixture of the rutile and anatase forms. The PCO of Cu(II)-EDTA was examined in a circulating reactor with 20 L of 10(-4) M Cu(II)-EDTA and synthetic and real wastewaters at pH 4 and 6.5, respectively. The removals of both Cu(II) and DOC were initially relatively rapid, but slowed as the reaction proceeded and generally followed first-order kinetics. The rate constants for the removal of Cu(II) and DOC were 1.1 x 10(-3) and 1.6 x 10(-3) min-1, respectively. The efficiency of the PCO in the decomplexation of Cu(II)-EDTA increased with increasing H2O2 dose using both the synthetic and real wastewaters. Therefore, we suggest the PCO process using the solar/immobilized TiO2 system, with addition of H2O2 as well as filtration for the removal of suspended solids, can be effectively applied to the treatment of Cu(II)-EDTA containing real wastewater.

Metal speciation in sulphidic sediments: a new method based on oxidation kinetics modelling in the presence of EDTA.

The solid phase partitioning of metals (Zn, Cu and Pb) was determined in four anoxic, metal polluted sediments by investigating at pH 8 the 1 day oxidation kinetics of the metal sulphide phases present in the sediments in a background solution containing excess EDTA. A mathematical model consisting of a combination of two pseudo-first order reactions was used to fit the metal release data as a function of oxidation time. The model permitted to fractionate the trace metals in a 'quickly-oxidizable' and a 'slowly-oxidizable' fraction, which could be assigned to two different trace metal pools, respectively (1) FeS minerals (e.g. amorphous FeS, mackinawite) and (2) discrete trace metal sulphide phases. The sum of the fractions associated with these sulphide pools was taken as an approximation for the sulphide-associated fraction of the trace metals and coincided (for the case of Zn and Pb) with the sulphide-associated fraction derived from the analysis of acid volatile sulphide (AVS) and simultaneously extracted metals (SEM). Oxidation kinetics modelling allowed also determining the sulphide-associated fraction of a broad range of trace metals (as demonstrated for Cu) more accurately than the AVS/SEM method, which suffers from non-efficient extraction of a number of trace metal sulphides. A correction was made for the determination of the sulphide-associated fraction by subtracting the trace metal fraction dissolved after 1 day under anoxic conditions in the background EDTA solution. The combination of (1) one day oxidation kinetics modelling and (2) correction for the 1 day anoxic EDTA-soluble fraction is a suitable method to determine accurately the true sulphide speciation of trace metals in anoxic sediments.
