Rhinorrhea disrupts the quality of life of a large segment of the population. The first step to treating it properly is to make an accurate diagnosis of its underlying cause. This is not always a simple proposition, however, because rhinorrhea has many causes that can easily be confused in clinical practice. Diagnosis has come to rely increasingly on testing, but test costs add significantly to the health-care burden. This article reviews the use of medical logic in the differential diagnosis of rhinorrhea and describes the relative usefulness of various testing methods.
The term conjunctivitis covers all inflammatory processes affecting the conjunctiva. Bacterial and viral infections are the most frequent causes. Infectious conjunctivitis is rarely severe in industrialized countries, but trachomatous kerato-conjunctivitis is still the main cause of blindness all over the world. Most cases of bacterial conjunctivitis are treated with topical antibiotics. Viral conjunctivitis is frequent and, with the exception of herpetic conjunctivitis, has no specific treatment. Canaliculitis and dacryocystitis are rare but require specialized examination, treatment and follow-up.
Acute and general medical care facilities are often faced with the challenge of diagnosing and managing problems related to the external eye. Making the correct diagnosis, possessing knowledge of the natural course of the disease, and understanding the potential benefits and risks of topical ocular therapy are necessary for the proper management of an acute or chronic red eye.
