Stable chloroform emissions in southeastern China: insights from recent observations.

Chloroform (CHCl3) is a short-lived ozone-depleting substance not currently regulated under the Montreal Protocol. Due to the unique meteorological conditions in East Asia, CHCl3 emitted in this region has a greater potential to reach the stratosphere and contribute to ozone depletion. As an essential component of national CHCl3 emissions, southeastern China has attracted increasing attention. However, long-term observational data in this region remain relatively scarce, with no updates since 2020. In this study, we continuously measured atmospheric CHCl3 concentrations at a remote monitoring station in southeastern China from 1 June 2023 to 31 May 2025. Frequent concentration enhancements were observed during the monitoring period, with mixing ratios ranging from 9.3 to 134.1 ppt and an average value of 36.8 ± 19.7 ppt. Back-trajectory analysis indicated that air masses associated with elevated CHCl3 levels primarily originated from coastal industrial provinces in eastern China. Using the Potential Source Contribution Function and Concentration Weighted Trajectory methods, we identified the Yangtze River Delta (Jiangsu, Anhui, and Zhejiang Provinces) and Jiangxi Province as dominant source regions. Emissions of CHCl3 in southeastern China were estimated using the Tracer Ratio Method to be approximately 30.1 ± 5.3 Gg/yr from 2023-06-01 to 2025-05-31, indicating overall stability relative to earlier estimates and no apparent upward trend. These findings provide updated insights into the current status of CHCl3 emissions in southeastern China and highlight the need for continued monitoring and emission assessment of CHCl3 in East Asia, given its unregulated status and implications for ozone layer recovery.

Vascular plants as sensitive indicators of lead and PCB transport from local sources in the Canadian Arctic.

Vascular plants collected at background locations in the Canadian Arctic were assessed as biological indicators of the aerial transport of contaminants from nearby military radar sites. Significantly higher levels of lead and PCBs were found in plants from site background areas (collected up to 10 km from any known sources of contamination) than remote locations (collected at least 20 km away from any human activity) which indicates that these contaminants are being aerially redistributed from the sites to plants in surrounding background areas. An analysis of individual PCB congener signatures in plant site background samples using principal components analysis (PCA) revealed that the past use of specific commercial PCB formulations at these sites, such as Aroclor 1260 on the east coast, is reflected in the PCB congener signature present in the plants. The implications of these findings in terms of elucidating sources and the distribution of contaminants in the Canadian Arctic are discussed.

Air Pollutants

Preneoplastic lesions, DNA adduct formation and mutagenicity of 5-, 7- and 9-hydroxy-2-nitrofluorene, metabolites of the air pollutant 2-nitrofluorene.

The metabolites of 2-nitrofluorene (NF), 5-, 7- and 9-OH-2-nitrofluorene (OH-NF) were compared for their genotoxicity. Seventy-two hours after intraperitoneal administration of these substances individually to rats (100 mg/kg body wt.), DNA adducts in liver tissue were analyzed with 32P-TLC and 32P-HPLC. An in vivo liver model was used to test the initiating capacity of the said substances for the formation of preneoplastic lesions. 5-OH-NF showed low capacity to induce DNA adduct formation and low potential as initiator to induce preneoplastic lesions-foci/nodules in the liver of rats. Both 7- and 9-OH-NF induced DNA adducts and preneoplastic liver lesions but with smaller quantities compared to NF. It seems that 7- and 9-OH-NF can not be considered as detoxification products of NF. In general, the initiating capacity of these substances for the formation of preneoplastic lesions has a good correlation with their potency to form DNA adducts.
