[New control technic for tooth mobility].

Abstract

The method described, used to establish tooth mobility, is a refinement of the method of Mühlemann, 30 years old. The improvements include a larger sensitivity of the chain of measures, a better stabilizatiin of the intraoral fixatioin of the instruement, the utilization of a retainer on the tooth to be tested, which ensures the precision of the point of forcetesting. This point remains the same for all measurements. Finally, the recording of the test on paper allows for an objective comparison of the course of the case.

Efficient soldering index materials for fixed partial dentures and implant substructures.

Multiple-unit fixed partial dentures routinely require an intraoral index to ensure accurate fit. One of the most commonly used materials is Duralay acrylic resin, which has yielded satisfactory clinical results, but one disadvantage has been a prolonged setting time. This study compared the setting times of two autopolymerizing resins, Duralay and G. C. Pattern resin. The dimensional accuracy of these materials was also compared with one light-cured resin, G.C. Unifast light-cure resin. All three materials were suitable to relate castings with clinically acceptable outcomes, and chairside time could be saved with the use of recently introduced indexing materials.

Survival rate and failure characteristics for two post designs.

The dental records of 638 patients treated with 788 posts and cores were studied to analyze failure rate and failure characteristics for two post designs. Frequency of the technical failures, loss of retention, root fracture, and post fracture were recorded 4 to 5 years after post cementation. There were two types of posts: custom-cast tapered posts and parallel-sided serrated posts. The cumulative failure rate was 15% for 456 tapered posts and 8% for 332 Para-Post posts. Loss of retention was the most frequent reason for failure for both types of posts, whereas root fractures had the most serious consequences, and all resulted in extraction. A significantly higher success rate was recorded for parallel-sided serrated posts, compared with custom-cast posts, regarding the total failure rate and the severity of the failure (p < 0.05).
