[Gingival tolerance to intermediate bridge elements].

Abstract

Factors affecting gingival response to pontics are the design, the material used and its roughness and the pressure exerted on the ridge. With a triangular ridge and a large available space, gingival health is promoted by ridge-lap pontics, (with large gingival and lingual embrasures) contacting the ridge with a glazed porcelain or a highly polished gold surface, and without pressure. With a rounded ridge and a narrow available space, modified-saddle pontics are used and the bucco-lingual width is reduced.

Fracture toughness determination of dental materials by laboratory testing and finite element models.

This study assessed the effectiveness of finite element analysis in predicting the stress intensity factor (KIC) for three types of dental materials: a glass ionomer, a dental amalgam, and a composite resin. Laboratory tests were conducted on small single-edge notch specimens loaded in three-point bending to determine values for fracture toughness (KQ). Using the dimensions measured for each laboratory specimen, a J integral approach was employed to calculate KIC using finite element analysis. Both two-dimensional plane strain and three-dimensional models were used in determining KIC for each specimen, and these values were compared to the KQ values obtained from laboratory tests. The results indicated that no significant differences existed between laboratory results and those obtained from both two- and three-dimensional finite element models (P > .85). For the three-dimensional model, values for KIC were found to vary across the specimen thickness, with the values at the center of the specimen closely paralleling those obtained from the two-dimensional plane strain model. It was concluded that the two-dimensional plane strain J integral technique was as effective as the three-dimensional technique in calculating values for KIC.

Review of the 1994 dental materials literature.

OBJECTIVES: Electronic databases provide strong support for research and education literature searches. However, there is still some lag in time between publication and updates of the database. The objective of this summary was to identify and categorize the 1994 dental materials scientific literature that dealt with restorative dentistry. METHODS: Seventeen primary journals were manually searched via the Tables of Contents and 88 secondary journals were manually or electronically searched. Dental materials citations were categorized into 15 major sections and several subsections, excluding case reports and literature primarily related to dental implants or biomedical materials outside of dentistry. RESULTS: Nearly twelve hundred citations were identified, the largest number being associated with composites and glass ionomers. SIGNIFICANCE: This list provides a comprehensive source for review by academicians and researchers to bridge the gap between initial publication and electronic citation.

Stability of dental waxes following repeated heatings.

The flow and strength properties of dental waxes were examined following excessive and repeated heatings of the materials. For one product, the flow at 40 +/- 0.5 degrees C was reduced by 25.3% following heating above 200 degrees C. A decrease of the elastic modulus at 20 +/- 1 degree C by approximately 66% was observed in some cases after the heating temperature had been increased to 300 degrees C. Property variations were related to compositional changes, which were investigated by infrared spectoscopy and thermal analysis. Exposure of dental waxes to temperatures higher than 200 degrees C, particularly if it is repeated, may affect the composition and properties, resulting in inferior materials.
