Pulmonary sequestration is a congenital anomaly of lung parenchyma that can be definitively treated only with surgical resection. We report a case of an intralobar sequestration of the right lower pulmonary lobe in an infant successfully treated with video-thoracoscopic surgical removal of the involved lobe at 6 months of age.
Fetal thoracic anomalies often lead to pulmonary hypoplasia with subsequent fetal or neonatal demise. Therefore, in utero sonographic identification of these anomalies is important. Unlike cardiac anomalies, most noncardiac thoracic abnormalities are easily detected with ultrasound. An unusually small thorax is usually obvious to the experienced sonographer, and thoracic masses are commonly observed on the routinely obtained four-chamber view of the heart. This article reviews the many causes of pulmonary hypoplasia with an emphasis placed on thoracic masses. Many examples of pathological fetal thoracic conditions are provided as well as a listing of differential considerations with regard to sonographic appearances of chest masses.
A forty-eight-year-old man with a history of pulmonary tuberculosis and scarring of both hila and upper lobes was noted to have bilateral pulmonary pseudosequestration, in which the blood supply originated from a coronary artery fistulous vessel arising from the left circumflex artery and draining into the pulmonary artery. This is the first reported patient with the source of blood supply to the pulmonary pseudosequestration arising from a coronary artery fistula.
