Notes on "multiple personality".

Abstract

The similarity of the concepts, splitting and "multiple personality," has been generally overlooked. Both are originally present in all human beings, both have pathological connotations in clinical usage, but both may actually be observed in a wide variety of "normal" psychological phenomena. Some residues of each developmental phase are preserved in the depth of the mind. These remnants are the constituents of the multiple personality of human beings.

The criminal responsibility of people with multiple personality disorder.

Because multiple personality disorder (MPD) is more frequently diagnosed today than in the past, it is likely that more multiples will plead insanity. The courts are in a state of disarray as to how best to respond to these pleas. This article considers multiples' responsibility on three interpretations of the status of their alters: that they are different people; that they are different personalities; or that they are parts of one complex, deeply divided personality. On all three theories multiples are nonresponsible. Nevertheless, three rare circumstances exist under which multiples should be found guilty. The article concludes by indicating the kinds of issues psychiatry might explore to further assist the law in its analysis of the criminal responsibility of multiples.

Witches, multiple personalities, and other psychiatric artifacts.

Contemporary psychiatric misdirections derived primarily from standard medical errors of oversimplification, misplaced emphasis, and invention are reviewed. These particular errors, however, were in part prompted and sustained by the sociocultural fads and fashions of the day. The results have been disastrous for everyone--patients, families, the public and psychiatry itself.
