Auricular calcification.

Abstract

Auricular calcification in two patients was discovered by palpation and x-ray of the pinnae of the ears. In one patient auricular calcification was locally secondary to chronic inflammation, while in the other patient systemically secondary to adrenal insufficiency, a systemic factor.

The effects of glucocorticoid therapy.

The therapeutic benefit of glucocorticoids appears to derive chiefly from their suppression of immunologic and inflammatory responses, but beyond these generalized phenomena, there are a number of tissue-specific effects. Increasing knowledge of these actions is shedding light on such issues as steroid resistance and steroid-induced adrenocortical insufficiency.

Adrenal Insufficiency

Reversible megaesophagus associated with atypical primary hypoadrenocorticism in a dog.

Megaesophagus, hypercalcemia, and eosinophilia associated with glucocorticoid deficiency were detected in a 5-year-old neutered female Standard Poodle with concurrent hypothyroidism. Clinical and biochemical abnormalities resolved with glucocorticoid replacement treatment, and the dog was normal 29 months after diagnosis. The dog's breed and sex and the existence of a second endocrinopathy supported an underlying immunologic disorder.
