Solar cheilitis.

Abstract

Solar cheilitis is a premalignant lesion seen predominantly on the vermilion of the lower lip in light-complexioned, middle-aged men who have spent considerable time outdoors. The lesions most likely to be dysplastic or neoplastic are those with heavy keratinization, erosion, ulceration, and erythema. Lips with any of these changes should be biopsied. The most common therapeutic modality is surgical excision of the affected area of vermilion. Well-planned and well-executed procedures provide good functional and cosmetic results.

Localized cutaneous polyvinylpyrrolidone storage disease mimicking cheilitis granulomatosa.

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), a polymer of the monomer N-vinylpyrrolidone with various molecular weights, was originally developed as a plasma expander. Currently, it is widely used in hair sprays, skin care products, fruit juices, and as a retarding agent in drugs such as procaine and hormones. PVP polymers with a molecular weight greater than 20,000 cannot be excreted by the kidneys and therefore are phagocytosed and permanently stored in the reticular endothelial system, leading to the so-called PVP storage disease. We report a case of localized cutaneous PVP storage disease presenting with persistent upper lip swelling and mimicking cheilitis granulomatosa, which has never been reported before.

[How I explore...cheilitis].

A cheilitis is an inflammatory disease confined to the lips. Several origins are recognized. Their nature is often different in children and adults. Some are spongiotic due to irritation or allergic reaction. Other lesions are keratotic and can evolve to leucoplasia and epidermoid carcinoma.

Multiple suppurative cystic lesions of the lips and buccal mucosa: a case of suppurative stomatitis glandularis.

Cheilitis glandularis (CG) is a rare inflammatory salivary gland disease that usually affects the lips. Although the etiology of CG is still unknown, it is believed to be a hereditary disease with an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. Three clinical presentations of CG are described in the literature: simple, superficial suppurative, and deep suppurative. A case of deep suppurative CG that extended to the buccal mucosa has been previously reported as suppurative stomatitis glandularis (SSG). Here we report a case of SSG in a 64-year-old white female with a history of bilateral renal transplants for adult polycystic kidney disease, who presented with painful swollen lips and bilateral buccal mucosal lesions. The diagnosis and management of the case is discussed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second report of SSG, a rare condition affecting the minor salivary glands in the oral cavity.
