Human prostatic epithelial cell culture models.
Abstract
Replicative cultures of human prostatic epithelial cells from normal and neoplastic tissues provide a unique model in which to investigate the etiology of prostatic cancer and to compare the efficacy of therapeutic agents. Recently developed and available methods have been used to isolate and characterize epithelial lines from normal neonatal prostate and from metastatic cancer tissue. A normal prostatic epithelial line has been transformed in vitro by SV 40 virus. Properties of normal, cancer-derived, and transformed normal cells have been compared. The use of these cultures now permits direct experimentation on human cells that would not be feasible by other means.
