[A new bacterium: Rochalimaea].

Abstract

Originally limited to trench fever, infections due to Rochalimaea now comprise manifestations particular to patients with human immunodeficiency virus (bacillary angiomatosis and hepatic peliosis), but also manifestations as diverse as isolated fever, septicaemia, endocarditis, lymphocytic meningitis, or central neurological disorders, in immunodepressed or immunocompetent subjects. The involvement of Rochalimaea in cat-scratch fever remains debated. Microbiological analysis used for diagnosis has been modified to allow isolation of these new bacteria, whose culture is slow and difficult, in the course of the above-cited clinical manifestations, which should further extend the range of Rochalimaea infections.

Tateyamaria omphalii gen. nov., sp. nov., an alpha-Proteobacterium isolated from a top shell Omphalius pfeifferi pfeifferi.

A Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, coccoid to short rod-shaped marine bacterium strain MKT107(T) was isolated from the molluscan top shell Omphalius pfeifferi pfeifferi collected on the coast of Japan. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain MKT107(T) constitutes a new lineage in alpha-Proteobacteria related to the genera Nereida, Roseobacter, Staleya, Oceanibulbus and Sulfitobacter. Strain MKT107(T) was found to require salt for its growth and to be mesophilic. It contained 18:1omega7c and 16:0 as major cellular fatty acids and 3-OH 10:0 and 3-OH 12:0 as hydroxy fatty acids. The DNA base composition of the isolate was 61.6 mol% G+C. The major quinone was Q-10. Sufficient differences existed to distinguish this strain from currently recognized bacterial genera. Therefore, the isolate is classified as representing a new genus and species, Tateyamaria omphalii gen. nov., sp. nov. (type strain MKT107(T) =IAM 15108(T) =KCTC 12333(T); GenBank accession no. AB193438).

Utilization of hexamethylenetetramine (urotropine) by bacteria and yeasts.

A slow growing bacterial population able to utilize hexamethylelenetetramine (urotropine) as sole source of carbon, nitrogen and energy was isolated from soil. From this crude enrichment culture two bacteria were isolated and identified as Brevundimonas diminuta and a Phyllobacterium sp. by sequencing of 16S ribosomal DNA. These bacteria also grew on urotropine but at a lower rate than the enrichment culture. Addition of glucose to the latter resulted in growth of some yeasts that overgrew the bacteria. Assimilation of urotropine as sole nitrogen source is very common among yeasts, 46 out of 60 species tested showed this characteristic.

Sneathiella chinensis gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel marine alphaproteobacterium isolated from coastal sediment in Qingdao, China.

The taxonomic position of strain LMG 23452(T), which was isolated from coastal sediment from an aquaculture site near Qingdao, China, in 2000, was determined. Strain LMG 23452(T) comprised Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, motile rods and was found to be a halotolerant, aerobic, chemoheterotroph that produces catalase and oxidase. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain LMG 23452(T) shared approximately 89 % sequence similarity with members of the genera Devosia, Hyphomonas, Ensifer and Chelatococcus, which belong to two different orders within the Alphaproteobacteria. Further phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain LMG 23452(T) formed a separate branch within the order Rhizobiales, falling between the genera Devosia and Ensifer of the families Hyphomicrobiaceae and Rhizobiaceae, respectively. Strain LMG 23452(T) could be differentiated from its closest phylogenetic neighbours on the basis of several phenotypic features, including hydrolysis of the substrates starch and casein and assimilation of the carbohydrates d-glucose, d-mannose, mannitol, maltose and l-arabinose, and chemotaxonomically by the presence of the fatty acids C(14 : 0) 3-OH, C(16 : 1)omega11c, C(16 : 1)omega5c and C(18 : 1)omega5c. The major fatty acids detected in strain LMG 23452(T) were C(18 : 1)omega7c, C(16 : 0), C(19 : 0) cyclo omega8c, C(16 : 1)omega7c and C(17 : 1)omega6c and the G+C content of the genomic DNA was 57.1 mol%. Therefore, the polyphasic data support the placement of strain LMG 23452(T) within a novel genus and species, for which the name Sneathiella chinensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LMG 23452(T) (=CBMAI 737(T)).
