[Laparotomy closure with continuous polydioxanone sutures].

Abstract

The authors describe the method of closure of laparotomic wounds by means of an atraumatic continuous PDS loop suture. Based on evaluation of a group of 166 patients they appreciate the positive aspects of the technique of this suture, in particular the speed, easy implementation and safe closure of laparotomy. As regard the sewing material, they value highly the quality of atraumatic fibres which are firm and do not irritate the tissues.

Synthesis and lateral root-inducing activity of novel N-substituted-2-piperidones with a 1,4-benzodioxan ring.

Novel N-substituted-2-piperidones with a 1,4-benzodioxan ring were prepared and evaluated for their activity to induce lateral roots in lettuce seedlings. Compounds were obtained by aldol condensation of the lithium enolate of N-substituted-2-piperidones with 1,4-benzodioxan-6-carbaldehyde. Of the series compounds tested, N-cinnamyl-3-[1-(1,4-benzodioxan-6-yl)-1-hydroxymethyl]-2-piperidone (2e) had the highest activity. In seedlings treated with 10 ppm of 2e, all of the primary roots formed lateral roots. Only erythro-2e showed lateral root-inducing activity, while threo-2e was inactive.

Water: foldase activity in catalyzing polypeptide conformational rearrangements.

Polypeptide conformer interconversion in a low dielectric environment is shown to be highly dependent on water concentration. Water increases this rate by 10(3), apparently by catalyzing hydrogen bond exchange, and thereby presenting functional properties analogous to that of a foldase. This catalytic effect is demonstrated on the interconversion of a parallel gramicidin dimer into an antiparallel dimer. A Hill coefficient of 6.5 is observed, illustrating the highly cooperative nature of the process. Protein folding in nonpolar environs, such as the hydrophobic core of a protein or the hydrophobic domain of a lipid bilayer, may be contingent on and rate-limited by the scarcity of water.

Distribution of 1,4-dioxane in relation to possible sources in the water environment.

The distribution of 1,4-dioxane was investigated in surface and groundwater in relation to possible sources. Water samples from river, coastal sea, and groundwater were collected and examined in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, from 1995 to 1998. Almost all samples were contaminated by 1,4-dioxane. On annual changes, the concentrations did not vary significantly in river water. However, some samples were still heavily polluted in groundwater. The highest correlation was between the concentration of 1,4-dioxane and 1,1,1-trichloroethane in the polluted groundwater samples. Soil and groundwater that was polluted by 1,1,1-trichloroethane in the past is still a possible source of 1,4-dioxane. In regard to a survey of other sources, effluents from the combined collection treatment from apartment houses, river basin sewage systems, and chemical plants were examined. The load unit of 1,4-dioxane from the treated effluent of domestic wastewater was assumed to be approximately 0.25 mg/person/day. This was derived from commonly used household chemicals, which contained 1,4-dioxane as a by-product. In river basin sewage systems, the concentrations in effluents varied significantly. High concentration inflows were probably not degraded and released. Although 50-60% of removal was recognized in acclimatized activated sludge from a chemical plant, 1,4-dioxane was easily desorbed with water from sludge.
