[Personal computer used in visual function screening].

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The number of medical screenings is increasing. This fact is specially pronounced in the field of occupational health. Due to restricted financial resources and limitations in time there is a need for rationalisation in medical screenings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Possible uses of personal computers (PC) enabling organisational and financial benefits in medical screenings are suggested. By means of a test for colour-blindness it is shown how unfavourable technical conditions may be by-passed. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Rationalisation in medical screenings can be achieved when using the PC as a multi-functional screening-device as well as an expert system, measuring apparatus and as a communication-device. Due to a lack of literature it is difficult to discuss possible effects of technical differences between PC-based screenings of visual functions and screenings where "traditional". Reliability, sensitivity and validity is insufficiently investigated for many of the commercial available screening-devices based on a PC.

Pathologic scotopization: a shortened Nagel-II anomaloscopic micro-screw method.

The Nagel-II micro-screw method uses eleven colour equations between 620 and 560 nm. The luminance settings are given and are based on the data of colour normal individuals. In the shortened version, intended to detect pathologic scotopization, it is ascertained at which position of the micro-screw the patient's colour adjustments drop beneath the level of 60 scale Units. A total of 64 patients was examined. 29 congenital colour defectives and 35 acquired colour defectives. With the shortened micro-screw method the patients can be divided into four groups: (1) a group without pathologic scotopization, which includes congenital protan defectives: (2) a group in which pathologic scotopization starts; (3) a group with evident pathologic scotopization, due to Stargardt's disease and other cone dystrophies; and (4) a group with complete pathologic scotopization, which includes the congenital achromats and the end-stages of the cone dystrophies.

Generating colour and texture verniers.

This paper describes computer graphics techniques for presenting visual stimuli in a vernier format composed out of coloured texture patterns. Such stimuli can be used to investigate the performance at the task of localising boundaries mediated by changes in colour and/or texture. We summarise the contents as follows: (1) Techniques for presenting visual stimuli are reviewed with a view to how they might be used to present colour and texture verniers. (2) The design of the vernier stimuli for the localisation task is considered. (3) Significant elements of this design are: (a) the use of non-isoplanatic textures to avoid interference effects at boundaries, (b) the modulation of the texture patterns along axes in MacLeod-Boynton colour space so that relative retinal cone contributions are controlled, and (c) the use of double-buffering, colour map manipulation, and contrast randomisation techniques to avoid problems commonly encountered when presenting computer graphics stimuli on colour monitors. (4) Results of a psychophysical experiment that presents colour and texture verniers are reported elsewhere.

[The history of research in color perception as a key to understanding various forms of congenital defects in red-green perception].

It is accurate to date the first scientific report about colour-deficiencies on 1777. Earlier descriptions may be followed up to the end of the 17th century. But usually it is only mentioned, that mistakes had happened. Huddart 1777, however, reported for the first time, that more than one person was involved in a family and that demonstrations of coloured ribbons helped to find out which colours became confounded. The famous self-observation of Dalton contains the assortment of individually combined silk-threads, which is an anticipation of subsequent arrangement-tests. Goethe developed a systematic arrangement-test of self-made small coloured targets with colours out of his own colour-wheel. A. Seebeck was the first who--using the spectrum for examination--found out that a special group of subjects showed a shortening of the spectrum at the red end. From this result Helmholtz concluded the existence of two types of red-green blindness. This new argument for the trichromatic organisation of our colourvision was the basis for the statement of the three types: protanopia, deuteranopia and tritanopia (v. Kries, A. König). Rayleigh later on succeeded in finding out anomalous trichromats following preparatory examinations of Maxwell. Nagel has the merit to have analysed protanomaly and deuteranomaly using the anomaloscope constructed by himself. Side by side with the spectral colour-tests pseudoisochromatic plates were developed for diagnostic purposes, at first thought out and introduced by Stilling and in the meantime used in many variations.
