[High yield techniques for bupleurum falcatum L].

Abstract

The growth of plants may be controlled by clipping the aerial part. This may increase the yield of Bupleurum falcatum. Different methods of cultivation may result in different outputs of crude drugs. Compared with land plotting, deep ploughing and high ridging may increase the root weight of one-year-old plant by 28% and 50% respectively.

Bioactive triterpenoids from Salvia species.

Salvia species are important medicinal and culinary plants, and they have been the subject of numerous chemical and biological studies. The bioactive triterpenoids of Salvia species, reported in the literature to date, are reviewed. About 200 triterpenoids, almost 80 of which are new, isolated, and characterized from about 100 Salvia species, are presented herein. In addition to the diverse biological activities of the pure triterpenoids, studies on biological activity of extracts of Salvia species are also described.

Systematics and health effects of chemically distinct tannins in medicinal plants.

The research began with an investigation of tannins from traditional medicinal plants and resulted in isolation and structure determination of hundreds of ellagitannins and dehydroellagitannins, as well as their oligomers and oxidized derivatives with various structures specific to each plant species. These polyphenols have been classified according to the stage of oxidative structural transformation and oligomerization, into types I-IV and I+ to IV+, etc. Parallels were found between their oxidative transformations and plant evolution. They were also classified by the linkage units between the monomers, into DOG, GOD, GOG and DOGOD types (D=Diphenoyl, G=Galloyl, O=Oxygen), etc. Besides their fundamental activities, e.g., reduction and anti-peroxidation properties, remarkable biological and pharmacological activities of various potencies have also been found, including, amongst others, inhibition of lipid-peroxidation, mutagenicity of carcinogens and tumor promotion, host-mediated antitumor effects specific to particular tannin structures, antiviral activity and potentiation of antibacterial activity.

[Studies on chemical constituents in seeds of Taxus mairei II].

OBJECTIVE: To study the chemical constituents in seeds of Taxus mairei. METHOD: Preparative HPLC, TLC and spectroscopic analyses were used to isolate and elucidate the chemical constituets in the plant. RESULT: Seven taxane diterpenoids were isolated from the seeds of T. mairei and identified as taxinine A(1), 9-deacetyltaxinine(2), 9-deacetyltaxinine E(3), 2-deacetyltaxinine(4), taxezopidine G(5), 2-deacetoxytaxinine J(6), 2-deacetoxytaxuspine C(7). CONCLUSION: Except compounds 5,6, all the compounds were obtained from seeds of this plant for the first time.
