One- and two-photon singlet oxygen generation with new fluorene-based photosensitizers.

The spectral properties of new fluorene-based photosensitizers for efficient singlet oxygen production are investigated at room temperature and 77 K. Two-photon absorption (2PA) cross-sections of the fluorene derivatives are measured by the open aperture Z-scan method. The quantum yields of singlet oxygen generation under one- and two-photon excitation (phi(delta) and 2PAphi(delta), respectively), are determined by the direct measurement of singlet oxygen luminescence at approximately 1270 nm. The values of phi(delta) are independent of excitation wavelength, ranging from 0.6-0.9. The singlet oxygen quantum yields under two-photon excitation are 2PAphi(delta) approximately 1/2 phi(delta), indicating that the two processes exhibit the same mechanism of singlet oxygen production, independent of the mechanism of photon absorption.

Stoichiometrically different inclusion complexes of 2-aminofluorene and 2-amino-9-hydroxyfluorene in beta-cyclodextrin: a spectrofluorimetric study.

Beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CDx) forms inclusion complexes with 2-aminofluorene (2AF) and 2-amino-9-hydroxyfluorene (2AHF) in different stoichiometries (Guest-host ratio 1:1 and 1:2 respectively) which is discussed on the basis of study by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The ground and the excited state acidity constants for the neutral-monocation equilibrium of the two fluorophores in aqueous beta-CDx medium are determined by spectrophotometric and fluorimetric titration methods respectively. The dual fluorescence observed for 2AHF monocation in aqueous solution is due to the formation of monocation-water exciplex. This monocation-water exciplex formation is hindered in beta-CDx solution by the inclusion complexation. Based on the results obtained, the structures of the inclusion complexes are proposed.

Photodegradation of polyfluorene and fluorene oligomers with alkyl and aromatic disubstitutions.

The stability of fluorene-based compounds and polymers, especially at the bridged C-9 position under photoirradiation and thermal treatment, has claimed wide attention. We report the electronic, vibrational, and MALDI-TOF mass spectral combined studies for the fluorene oligomers with alkyl and aromatic substitutions under UV-light irradiation. The low-energy emission and the formation of ketonic defects after degradation highly depend on the proportion of alkyl substitution. The oligomer with fully aromatic substitution shows good stability, but when the proportion of alkyl substitution increases, their photostability rapidly decreases. The mass spectra show not only the mass of the fluorenone-fluorene trimer but also another new degradation product with a large mass (pristine oligomer plus 14) from alkyl oxidation, which testify to the assistance of alkyl side chain during degradation. We propose that the degradation of fluorene is a radical chain process propagated by alkyl side chains, and then the different stability between alkyl and aromatic substitution can be well explained.
