DATALOAD: a user-friendly program to prepare binding data for the "LIGAND" software.

Abstract

This paper presents a program for the preparation of binding data to be used with the LIGAND software. This program will analyze saturation and competition/displacement binding data, and prepare all the necessary files that provide the input values for the final processing by the LIGAND package. Features include choices of different units for specific activity of the labeled tracer, and screen editing of the data, and results are provided as an average of replicates or as individual points. The program creates a graphic file to observe the raw data as a B/T vs T graph, prior to the analysis with the LIGAND program. The program saves all the information in a session file. Calculation of the bound/free values for the raw data is also provided.

XNBC: a simulation tool. Application to the study of neural coding using hybrid networks.

XNBC is a software package for simulating biological neural networks. Two neuron models are available, a leaky integrator model and an ion-conductance model. Inputs to the simulated neurons can be provided by experimental data stored in files, allowing the creation of 'hybrid' networks. Graphic tools are used to describe the modeled neurons as well as the network. Neuron and network parameters can be modified during the simulation, to mimic electrical stimulations and drugs action. The temporal evolution of the network and of selected neurons can be visualized. A point process, frequency or dynamic analysis of the simulator output can be performed. The successive stages of the creation of a hybrid network are explained.

Improved resolution in the gel electrophoresis of proteins by a periodically interrupted electric field.

The capability of the commercial gel electrophoresis apparatus with intermittent scanning of fluorescence (HPGE-1000, LabIntelligence) to provide time-dependent zone dispersion allows one to quantitate resolution. Using a model protein separation, that between phycoerythrin and fluorescein-labeled conalbumin, resolution was compared between separations conducted at a constant field strength of 80 V/cm and one conducted in 10-s pulses of the same field strength, interrupted periodically by 120 s in the absence of an electric field. Resolution was improved by a factor of two in the discontinuous application of the electric field compared to that obtained in its continuous application. Similarly, the intermittent application of 80 V/cm for 10 s, followed by 120-s pauses, gave rise to twice the resolution obtained from a continuous application of 7 V/cm.
