Mother to child transmission of HIV-1 is a leading challenge of public health in developing countries. Various risk factors for vertical transmission of HIV have been identified, and both prenatal and postnatal infection by breast feeding occur. A bundle of interventions has lead to a dramatic drop of infection rates in industrialised countries. For the developing countries it is crucial to increase accessibility of health services, to perform prevention campaigns, and to provide antiretroviral prophylaxis for pregnant women.
