Pulmonary function tests before and after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Abstract

Pulmonary function tests were performed in 22 patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Measurements were made before, 24 h after, and 6 weeks after operation (12 patients). At 24 h postoperatively there were significant decreases in forced expiratory volume in 1 s, vital capacity, functional residual capacity and total lung capacity to 75% (p < 0.001), 73% (p < 0.001), 92% (p = 0.002) and 83% (p < 0.001) of pre-operative values respectively. Inspiratory and expiratory mouth pressures decreased to 66% (p < 0.001) and 63% (p < 0.001) of the pre-operative pressures respectively. There was a reduction in PaO2 (p < 0.01) and an increase in alveolar-arterial gradient (p < 0.001) but no change in PaCO2 at 24 h. The pulmonary function tests measured in the patients who returned after 6 weeks had returned to pre-operative values.

Exploiting the pressure effect on lipase-catalyzed wax ester synthesis in dense carbon dioxide.

The present work focuses on the thermodynamic interpretation of the lauryl oleate biosynthesis in high-pressure carbon dioxide. Lipase-catalyzed lauryl oleate production by oleic acid esterification with 1-dodecanol over immobilized lipase from Rhizomucor miehei (Lipozyme RM IM) was successfully performed in a sapphire window batch stirred tank reactor (BSTR) using dense CO(2) as reaction medium. The experiments were planned to elucidate the pressure effect on the reaction performance. With increasing the pressure up to 10 MPa, the catalytic efficiency of the studied enzyme improved rising up to a maximum and decreased at higher pressure values. Kinetic observations, exhibiting that dense CO(2) expanded reaction mixture in subcritical conditions led to higher performance than when diluted in a single supercritical phase, were elucidated by phase-equilibrium arguments. The experimental results were justified with emphasis on thermodynamic interpretation of the studied system. Particularly, the different reaction performances obtained were related to the position of the operating point with respect to the location of liquid-vapor phase boundaries of the reactant fatty acid/alcohol/CO(2) ternary system. The outlook for exploitation of CO(2) expanded phase at lower pressure compared to supercritical phase, with heterogeneous system in which the solid catalyst particles are exposed to dense CO(2) expanded reaction mixture, in developing new biotransformation schemes is promising.

Tailoring porous silica films through supercritical carbon dioxide processing of fluorinated surfactant templates.

The tailoring of porous silica thin films synthesized using perfluoroalkylpyridinium chloride surfactants as templating agents is achieved as a function of carbon dioxide processing conditions and surfactant tail length and branching. Well-ordered films with 2D hexagonal close-packed pore structure are obtained from sol-gel synthesis using the following cationic fluorinated surfactants as templates: 1-(3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8-tridecafluoro-octyl)pyridinium chloride (HFOPC), 1-(3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,8,8,8-dodecafluoro-7-trifluoromethyl -octyl)pyridinium chloride (HFDoMePC), and 1-(3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9,10,10,10-heptadecafluoro-decyl)pyridinium chloride (HFDePC). Processing the sol-gel film with CO2 (69-172 bar, 25 and 45 degrees C) immediately after coating results in significant increases in pore diameter relative to the unprocessed thin films (increasing from 20% to 80% depending on surfactant template and processing conditions). Pore expansion increases with CO2 processing pressure, surfactant tail length, and surfactant branching. The varying degree of CO2 induced expansion is attributed to the solvation of the "CO2-philic" fluorinated tail and is interpreted from interfacial behavior of HFOPC, HFDoMePC, and HFDePC at the CO2-water interface.

Electron photoemission from charged films: absolute cross section for trapping 0-5 eV electrons in condensed CO2.

The electron trapping or attachment cross section of carbon dioxide (CO2) condensed as thin films on a spacer of Ar is obtained using a simple model for electron trapping in a molecular film and then charge releasing from the same film by photon absorption. The measurements are presented for different electron exposures and impact energies, film thicknesses, and probing photon energies. The cross section for trapping an electron of incident energy between 0 and 5 eV reveals three different attachment processes characterized by a maximum at about 0.75 eV, a structured feature around 2.25 eV, and a shoulder around 3.75 eV. From the measurement of their dependence with the probing photon energy, the two lowest processes produce traps having a vertical electron binding energy of approximately 3.5 eV, whereas the highest one yields a slightly higher value of approximately 3.7 eV. The 0.75 eV maximum corresponds to the formation of vibrational Feshbach resonances in (CO2)n- anion clusters. The 2.25 eV feature is attributed to the formation of a vibrationally excited 2Piu anion in (CO2)n- clusters, followed by fast decay into its vibrational ground state without undergoing autodetachment. Finally, 3.75 eV shoulder is assigned to the well-known dissociative electron attachment process from 2Piu anion state producing the O- anion in the gas phase and the (CO2)nO- anions in clusters.
