For the treatment of some diseases, drugs are delivered suspended in sprays that are administered either intranasally or by inhalation. The characteristics of these sprays or flumes have an influence on the effectiveness of the drug and some of these characteristics are best understood if the emerging flumes can be visualized. At GlaxoWellcome we have developed a multi-exposure photographic system whereby individual flumes can be recorded at pre-set intervals over their entire time period, typically 250 ms. It may also be desirable to visualize the flume within the nasal passage and this may be achieved by the use of a glass model nose. In this paper I will summarize pre-existing photographic methods and describe in detail the new technique.
This article looks at problems, which may not be encountered in other places, associated with photography in tropical latitudes. It deals with the effects of high air temperatures and high water temperatures as they relate to film exposure, processing and storage. It mentions the effect of tropical conditions on photographic equipment, and difficulties in obtaining materials because of distances from suppliers to delivery point, with reference to the author's experiences in Townsville, Queensland, Australia.
We researched factors related to the success or failure in working relationships between free-lance medical illustrators and artist's representatives. In the fall of 1992, surveys were mailed to 230 medical illustrators; 105 (46%) completed surveys were returned. Respondents were divided into three categories: 1) medical illustrators currently represented, 2) medical illustrators previously represented, and 3) medical illustrators who had never been represented. Comparisons made among illustrators from the three groups included business practices, clientele, experience, and self-promotion techniques. These comparisons revealed notable differences and similarities between the three groups and were subsequently analyzed to identify the characteristics of medical illustrators who would benefit from professional representation.
