Trends in nonlinear signal processing.

Abstract

In this paper, we review several nonlinear filtering methods having desirable complementary properties to those of linear filters. Most of these methods are based on the median filter. Basic properties of these filters as well as some of their applications are reviewed.

Optical coherence tomography and electro-oculogram abnormalities in X-linked retinitis pigmentosa.

PURPOSE: To determine the correlations between morphological optical coherence tomography (OCT) and electrophysiological electro-oculogram (EOG) alterations in families with X-linked retinitis pigmentosa (XLRP). DESIGN: Observational case series. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: About 32 eyes of 16 members of four different families: Seven obligate carriers, four affected male homozygotes and five unaffected females underwent ophthalmologic completed exams including EOG and OCT. All the subjects were previously tested with genetic analysis. The results were statistically analysed. RESULTS: The abnormalities in OCT were detected in all carriers and affected males consisting of macular edema and increased RPE reflectivity compared to no alterations in unaffected females. The EOG was flat in all affected males; distinctly abnormal in eight eyes of obligate carriers; normal in two eyes of obligate carriers and in all unaffected females. In two obligate carriers, the EOG was not performed due to a nuclear cataract. The correlations between OCT and EOG alterations were statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: The OCT and EOG were demonstrated to be useful methods to identify the minimal alterations in carriers of X-linked retinitis pigmentosa.

Incrementality in naming and reading complex numerals: evidence from eyetracking.

Individuals speak incrementally when they interleave planning and articulation. Eyetracking, along with the measurement of speech onset latencies, can be used to gain more insight into the degree of incrementality adopted by speakers. In the current article, two eyetracking experiments are reported in which pairs of complex numerals were named (arabic format, Experiment 1) or read aloud (alphabetic format, Experiment 2) as house numbers and as clock times. We examined whether the degree of incrementality is differentially influenced by the production task (naming vs. reading) and mode (house numbers vs. clock time expressions), by comparing gaze durations and speech onset latencies. In both tasks and modes, dissociations were obtained between speech onset latencies (reflecting articulation) and gaze durations (reflecting planning), indicating incrementality. Furthermore, whereas none of the factors that determined gaze durations were reflected in the reading and naming latencies for the house numbers, the dissociation between gaze durations and response latencies for the clock times concerned mainly numeral length in both tasks. These results suggest that the degree of incrementality is influenced by the type of utterance (house number vs. clock time) rather than by task (reading vs. naming). The results highlight the importance of the utterance structure in determining the degree of incrementality.

Infantile nystagmus: current concepts in diagnosis and management.

This review examines current approaches to the diagnosis and management of congenital forms of nystagmus. Emphasis is placed on diagnostic features that are amenable to clinical identification but those issues that can be addressed only with more detailed investigations, such as eye movement recording, are indicated. Non-surgical management, including prism spectacles, contact lenses and vision therapy, is discussed, as are surgical approaches. Because many aspects of congenital forms of nystagmus, particularly as experienced by patients with the condition in their normal lives, are poorly addressed in both the clinical and research literature, these limitations are also highlighted.
