[Bronchial hyperreactivity in infancy].

Abstract

Airway responsiveness may be defined as the case with which airways narrow upon exposure to physical and chemical stimuli and drugs. Bronchial hyperresponsiveness reflects an excessive bronchoconstricting response to these stimuli. Although in part it may be genetically mediated, a number of environmental factors (allergens, viruses and contaminants) are also involved in increasing bronchial responsiveness through airway inflammation. We review the concept, etiology, pathogeny, clinical expression, diagnosis, preventative measures and treatment of bronchial hyperresponsiveness in pediatrics.

Hydroxyl radical and superoxide dismutase in blood of patients with Parkinson's disease: relationship to clinical data.

Hydroxyl radical (.OH) levels in blood, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in plasma (plasma-SOD) and in red blood cells (RBC) relative to Cu,Zn-SOD (SOD1) protein (RBC-SOD/SOD1), SOD1 protein in RBC (SOD1/RBC) and plasma (SOD1/plasma), and Mn-SOD protein in plasma (SOD2/plasma) were measured in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), multiple-system atrophy (MSA) with parkinsonism, and in control subjects. Patients with PD had significantly higher.OH and plasma-SOD values and significantly lower RBC-SOD/SOD1 and SOD1/RBC values than the corresponding MSA and control values. In PD, RBC-SOD/SOD1 values were significantly lower in older patients and were negatively correlated with age.OH levels were significantly higher in PD patients with early onset, a long period of illness or severe Yahr stage, and were negatively correlated with onset and positively correlated with duration of illness. RBC-SOD/SOD1 values in PD patients who received pergolide therapy were significantly higher than those in PD patients who received neither pergolide nor bromocriptine therapy. Therefore, the higher.OH level and the lower SOD1 activity may play a role in the onset and progression of PD, and pergolide may act neuroprotectively by inducing SOD1 activity.

Expression of c-series gangliosides in rat hepatocytes and liver tissues.

C-series gangliosides in rat hepatocytes and liver tissues were analyzed by thin-layer chromatographic (TLC) immunostaining with the specific monoclonal antibody A2B5. Primary cultures of hepatocytes isolated from adult rats were immunostained positively by A2B5. TLC immunostaining with A2B5 of gangliosides from the cells suggested that rat hepatocytes express c-series gangliosides including GT3, GT1c, GQ1c, and GP1c. Expression of c-series gangliosides in cultured hepatocytes was modulated by growth conditions of cells. The amount of GT3 was increased significantly by epidermal growth factor, while the contents of polysialo species such as GT1c, GQ1c, and GP1c were enhanced by higher cell density in culture. Examination of c-series gangliosides in rat liver tissues showed a unique developmental profile with a shift from GT3-dominant to polysialo species-dominant composition in late embryonic stages. These results suggest that the expression of c-series gangliosides in rat hepatocytes is regulated in a growth- and development-dependent manner.
