Verification timer for radiation therapy machines.

Abstract

Many cobalt and x-ray therapy machines use mechanical timers to control the given dose. There is no other timer on the machine to veryfy that the correct time was set or that the timer did not malfunciton. This article describes a digital timer that has been installed on the MIR therapy machines as a lapsed-time indicator.

Optical absorption and thermoluminescence in single NaCl:Cu crystals exposed to 60Co and UV light.

Optical absorption (OA) and thermally stimulated luminescence measurements were performed on NaCl:Cu+(0.04 and 0.08%) crystals blocks grown by the Czochralski technique. The NaCl:Cu+ crystals were exposed to gamma rays from a 60Co source (0.954-30 kGy) as well as UV radiation. The radiation-induced defects were mainly F, Cu- and Cu+ centres, with absorption bands located at 464, 256.7 and 236 nm, respectively. The absorption bands were found to be independent of the Cu impurity concentration. As the gamma-dose irradiation increased, the absorption band at 256.7 nm decreased while the band at 236.3 nm increased highly along with the 256.7 nm band. The F-centres produced at high gamma-radiation dose while thermally bleached showed an increase of the Cu+ OA bands with a simultaneous decrease of Cu- absorption band. The bleaching with F-light showed the participation of the F centre generated by gamma radiation on the ion valence changes of the doping impurity as well as on the TL phenomenon. The TL measurements in NaCl:Cu crystals with both impurity concentrations demonstrated that the Cu+ concentration has a strong influence on the intensity and shape of the glow peaks.

Measurements of the optical density and the thermoluminescent response of LiF:Mg,Ti exposed to high doses of 60Co gamma rays.

The absorption spectra and glow curves of LiF:Mg,Ti exposed to high doses of 60Co gamma rays as well as the optical density curves and thermoluminescent (TL) response as a function of dose were measured. Absorption peaks around 442 nm (2.8 eV), 307 nm (4.0 eV) and 248 nm (5.0 eV) were observed. The optical density is a linear function of dose up to 2500 Gy and then sublinear for the 5.0 eV band, and for the 4.0 eV band it is sublinear with a filling constant of 2.1 x 10(-4) and 6.2 x 10(-4) Gy(-1). The dose response of the 2.8 eV band is linear from 2500 Gy to 10 kGy with a slope of 1.0 x 10(-5) Gy(-1). Once the absorption spectra were obtained, the glow curves and the TL response were obtained. In the dose range, 290-10,000 Gy, the TL response of peaks 5 and 7 was supralinear-sublinear.

Influence of the colloid type on the transfer of 60Co and 85Sr in silica sand column under varying physicochemical conditions.

The influence of two types of colloids (natural organic matter, NOM), a colloid with high affinity for radionuclides (RN(s)), and hydrophilic synthetic latex (SHL), a colloid with low affinity for RN(s) on the transfer of (60)Co and (85)Sr in a silica sand column was studied under different physicochemical conditions: pH (4.9), ionic strength (10(-3) M and 10(-2) M), concentration of colloids (100 mg l(-1), 10 mg l(-1)), flow velocity (12.4 cm h(-1) and 3.7 cm h(-1)), water saturation of the column (100% and 70%). In the absence of colloids, the transfer of (60)Co and (85)Sr was retarded compared to the transfer of the conservative tracer. In the presence of colloids and according to the specific physicochemical conditions, an acceleration or retardation of (60)Co and (85)Sr transfer was observed compared to their transfer in the absence of colloids. Our results evidenced that any colloids even with low reactivity could significantly modify the RN transfer. However, the extent to which the transfer was influenced differs according to the colloid type; the NOM exhibiting higher impact than SHL. Batch experiments helped in interpreting of the interactions between the colloids, RN(s) and solid phase observed in column.
