Anesthesia for hernia surgery.

Abstract

The knowledge and skills of the anesthesiologist enable him or her to evaluate and prepare a patient and then to choose and administer anesthesia in a way that provides safety and good operating conditions. Current anesthesia practice tends toward less extensive routine laboratory screening and less aggressive NPO policies. Advances in pharmacology allow more rapid recovery with fewer unpleasant drug side effects. These factors contribute to making hernia surgery, particularly in the outpatient setting, an increasingly safe and benign experience.
