Sexual dysfunction in China.

Abstract

In recent years, many sexual dysfunction cases cropped up in various parts of China. The number of hospital with sexual dysfunction clinics has also increased. They are concentrated more in the big or coastal cities. In these clinics, compared with those of the west, there is a greater proportion of retarded ejaculation cases and a lower proportion of female patients. Deficient sexual knowledge is the commonest cause of sexual dysfunction especially with respect to the sexual problems of the aged. The treatment approaches used by these clinics combine psychotherapy, behavioural therapy, medication and the application of physical aids, and are in line with modern international trends. However, these clinics are only in their infancy and still face many obstacles. The government is still quite stringent on the control of drugs for treatment of sexual dysfunctions and also sees many sex aids as obscene. However, in view of the rapid development, the Chinese readiness to accept new ideas, the diligence of the Chinese medical professionals and the establishment of the Chinese Sexology Association in 1994, it is hoped that China will soon become one of the more advanced countries in Asia for the treatment of sexual dysfunctions.

Genetic Diversity and Pathogenicity of Thielaviopsis paradoxa Isolates and Implications for Coconut Palm Disease Management.

Thielaviopsis paradoxa is an important soilborne pathogen causing bleeding disease and stem rot of coconut and other palm species, posing a serious threat to coconut production in Hainan Province, China. This study investigated the biological characteristics, pathogenic variability, and genetic diversity of T. paradoxa isolates collected from coconut palms in this region, where population-level data remain limited. Isolates exhibited variability in mycelial growth and sporulation under different temperature, pH, and nutrient conditions, indicating physiological differentiation among strains. Pathogenicity assays across multiple coconut varieties revealed four pathogenicity types, with some isolates consistently showing greater aggressiveness. Genetic analysis based on ISSR markers revealed a high level of genetic diversity (82.96% polymorphism). Genetic clustering showed partial associations with geographic origin, host source, and pathogenicity patterns; however, these relationships are correlative and do not imply causality. Overall, this study provides the first region-specific synthesis of physiological traits, pathogenic variability, and ISSR-based genetic diversity of T. paradoxa in Hainan, contributing baseline information for future population genomic studies and supporting the development of improved disease management strategies for coconut palms.[Formula: see text] Copyright © 2026 The Author(s). Ancient DNA reveals early use of melons in China's Song dynasty.

Melon (Cucumis melo L.) domestication is thought to have occurred independently once in Northeast Africa and twice in India, but archaeobotanical seed remains point to a possible additional domestication event in China. Because Cucumis seeds are difficult to diagnose morphologically, genomic data from archaeological material are needed to evaluate these scenarios and reconstruct ancient melon traits. We sequenced two Song Dynasty (960-1279 CE) melon seeds from Shuomen Gugang (China), recovering 5.5× and 2.1× nuclear genome coverage. Nuclear and chloroplast analyses place both seeds within cultivated C. melo from China, within the "agrestis" East Asian gene pool. To assess whether these seeds carried traits associated with sweet dessert melons, we examined loci underlying fruit phenotypes. Neither seed carried alleles for orange flesh; one harbored an allele linked to yellow/orange peel, the other possessed alleles associated with green flesh and reduced acidity. Since wild melons are monoecious, the presence of the derived andromonoecy allele in one seed, associated with rounder fruit shape, suggests early selection on fruit morphology. Together, these findings indicate that Song Dynasty melons were likely consumed as fresh or culinary fruits rather than sweet dessert melons. Their flesh coloration resonates with Song-period aesthetic sensibilities, exemplified by jade-green celadon ceramics frequently crafted in melon-shaped forms. By anchoring East Asian archaeobotanical remains within modern melon genomic variation, this study provides a temporal framework for melon cultivation in China and shows how ancient genomics can illuminate past crop use.

Pollution characteristics and health risks of PAHs and OPAHs in PM2.5 of an inland basin city in China under the influence of the clean air action plan.

Since the implementation of China's Clean Air Action, remarkable progress has been made in air pollution control, with continuous air quality improvement in Xi'an, a typical inland basin city in the Fenwei Plain. To clarify winter organic aerosol pollution variations and pinpoint targeted control needs under policy regulation, this study investigated PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and oxygenated derivatives (OPAHs) in winter Xi'an, focusing on pollution levels, chemical compositions, source contributions, meteorological impacts, regional transport and health risks. Historical comparison showed generally lower wintertime PAH concentrations in Xi'an during the period of China's clean-air actions. PMF results indicated mixed source influences on PAHs and OPAHs, with biomass-burning-related mixed combustion showing the largest contribution. During haze episodes, absolute concentrations of both PAHs and OPAHs increased; the increase was statistically significant for OPAHs but not for parent PAHs, while 4-5 ring PAHs and BcdPQ dominated the PAH and OPAH profiles, respectively. Meteorological variability, particularly synoptic pressure patterns, was strongly associated with pollutant concentrations, and regional pollution was dominated by in-basin accumulation combined with short-range transport from northern Shaanxi industrial zones. Haze periods exhibited higher toxic-equivalent concentrations, with OPAHs, particularly BcdPQ, dominating the toxicity-equivalent burden. Screening-level ILCR estimates generally remained below 10⁻4 but increased during haze episodes, especially for adult and elderly groups. In conclusion, China's clean air actions have coincided with lower wintertime PAH pollution, but stronger control of residential biomass and other solid-fuel combustion, traffic emissions, and OPAH formation remains necessary in the Fenwei Plain.
