A binocular pinhole device for visual field constraint during reading.

Abstract

The Binocular Pinhole Device requires binocular vision, without constraints on head-movements, for viewing a group of letters at one fixation. It is simple and adjustable for individual differences. The role of peripheral vision can be explored in experimental settings.

Irreducible representation and projection operator application to understanding nonlinear optical phenomena: hyper-Raman, sum frequency generation, and four-wave mixing spectroscopy.

Symmetry plays an essential role in understanding optical activities of a molecule in infrared and Raman vibrational spectroscopy as well as in nonlinear optical vibrational spectroscopy. Each vibrational mode belongs to an irreducible representation of the underlying symmetry group. In this paper, using the alpha-helical polypeptide symmetry as an example, we calculate all the third rank nonzero hyper-Raman tensors as well as the infrared and Raman tensors by applying the projection operators to each irreducible species. We demonstrate that the projection operator method provides selection rules for the infrared, Raman, and hyper-Raman vibrational transitions and also other nonlinear optical spectroscopy such as sum frequency generation and the four-, five-, and six-wave mixing coherent vibrational transitions. Specific expressions for all nonzero elements of the corresponding nonlinear susceptibility tensors in a laboratory-fixed coordinate frame are also deduced.

High-order Raman scattering of X rays by optical phonons and generation of ultrafast X-ray transients.

We study the modulation of x-ray diffraction in ideal crystals by a copropagating wave of optical vibrations generated by a fs-laser pulse. Our results suggest that in the synchronous interaction regime the output diffracted x-ray field has the form of ultrafast transients with a time structure even shorter than the period of the excited vibrational mode. The behavior is explained in terms of high-order Raman scattering of x rays by optical phonons.

Aqueous cholesteric liquid crystals using uncharged rodlike polypeptides.

The aqueous, lyotropic liquid-crystalline phase behavior of the alpha-helical polypeptide, poly(N(epsilon)-2-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]acetyl-lysine) (1), has been studied using optical microscopy and X-ray scattering. Solutions of optically pure 1 were found to form cholesteric liquid crystals at volume fractions that decreased with increasing average chain length. At very high volume fractions, the formation of a hexagonal mesophase was observed. The pitch of the cholesteric phase could be varied by a mixture of enantiomeric samples L-1 and D-1, where the pitch increased as the mixture approached equimolar. The cholesteric phases could be untwisted, using either magnetic field or shear flow, into nematic phases, which relaxed into cholesterics upon removal of field or shear. We have found that the phase diagram of 1 in aqueous solution parallels that of poly(gamma-benzyl glutamate) in organic solvents, thus providing a useful system for liquid-crystal applications requiring water as solvent.
