A virtual pattern generator for designing motor behavior tasks.

Abstract

A description of the hardware and software used to create movement patterns that differ spatially and temporally is explained. These tasks are presented to participants using a virtual pattern generator.

EcoCyc: Encyclopedia of Escherichia coli genes and metabolism.

The encyclopedia of Escherichia coli genes and metabolism (EcoCyc) is a database that combines information about the genome and the intermediary metabolism of E.coli. The database describes 3030 genes of E.coli , 695 enzymes encoded by a subset of these genes, 595 metabolic reactions that occur in E.coli, and the organization of these reactions into 123 metabolic pathways. The EcoCyc graphical user interface allows scientists to query and explore the EcoCyc database using visualization tools such as genomic-map browsers and automatic layouts of metabolic pathways. EcoCyc can be thought of as an electronic review article because of its copious references to the primary literature, and as a (qualitative) computational model of E.coli metabolism. How is bilateral symmetry of human faces used for recognition of novel views?

The role of bilateral symmetry in face recognition is investigated in two psychophysical experiments using a Same/Different paradigm. The results of Experiment 1 confirm the hypothesis that the ability to identify mirror symmetric patterns is used for viewpoint generalization by approximating the view symmetric to the learned view by its mirror reversed image. The results of Experiment 2 show that the match between this virtual view and the test image is performed directly between the images. Performance drops dramatically if the symmetry between the intensity patterns of the learning and the testing view is disturbed by an asymmetric illumination, although the symmetry between the spatial arrangement of high-level features is retained. Experimental results are discussed in terms of their relation to existing approaches to object recognition.

Visualizing the future of molecular graphics.

The field of computer graphics has played an important role in the advancement of structural molecular biology and in the development of structure-based drug design. This article will provide a brief background on the development of this technology, and then focus on the current trends and future directions in molecular graphics and how they will impact the practice of molecular modeling and design. Specific areas that will be covered include: 1) the development of surface and volume based representations of molecular properties and interactions; 2) new approaches to modeling flexible and multi-component structures, and 3) the impact of object-oriented graphics-based programming and the rapidly growing use of network based computing.
