Developing behavioral objectives for perioperative staff development.

Abstract

Behavioral objectives (i.e., clear statements that describe intended instructional outcomes) are a crucial component of educational planning for perioperative staff development. Properly written objectives promote positive learning outcomes such as increased motivation, better retention of information, and improved instructional accountability. This article describes the advantages of using behavioral objectives, gives a historical perspective of their development, presents a practical "how-to" approach to formulating them, and delineates their link to the selection of appropriate evaluation methods.

The inversion In(2L)t impacts complex, environmentally sensitive behaviors in Drosophila melanogaster.

Genetic variation in behavioral traits allows organisms to respond and adapt to environmental challenges. Genetic variation in behavior is often affected by many genes and thus has a complex genetic basis. Inversions, the reorientation of genes along the chromosome, tightly link genetic variants together because they suppress recombination. Therefore, inversions are believed to have a major impact on phenotypic variation because they combine the effects of multiple genes, which can pleiotropically alter multiple aspects of behavior. This study investigates how the inversion In(2L)t, found in Drosophila melanogaster populations around the world, impacts different aspects of behavior in an environment-sensitive manner. We test the activity, foraging, and startle-induced behavior of flies with different In(2L)t genotypes across sex and temperatures. We observe that Drosophila homozygous for In(2L)t sleep less frequently, spend more time away from a food source, and have a longer duration of startle response. Additionally, the impacts of In(2L)t on aspects of behavior can be sex-specific and are largely consistent across temperatures. Taken together, our research demonstrates that inversions can regulate aspects of behavior, and suggests hypotheses explaining the distribution of In(2L)t across space and time.

Developmental characteristics in sustained fetal tachycardia in 30 to 41 weeks of gestation.

The aim of the present study is to reveal gestational age-related changes in sustained foetal tachycardia (SFT). 24 h fetal heart rate (FHR) recordings were made on 102 normal pregnant women in 30-41 weeks of gestation. SFT was defined as an increase for 20 or more beats per minute from the FHR-baseline persisting for more than 20 min. In the results, SFTs in 38-39 weeks started during night-time (1900-0700) more frequently than during day-time (0700-1900) (P < 0.01, by chi-square test). The rate and duration were 0% and 0 min in 30-31 weeks of gestation, and increased to 85% and 114 min in 40-41 weeks, respectively. Two critical points were detected by a piecewise linear regression analysis: in the rate between 34-35 weeks and 36-37 weeks, and in the duration between 38-39 to 40-41 weeks. We conclude that gestational age-related changes in SFT depend on the developmental stages.
