Fungi are important and hyperdiverse organisms, yet chronically understudied. Most fungal clades have no reference genomes, impeding our understanding of their ecosystem functions and use as solutions in health and biotechnology. Also, opportunities for training in fungal biology and genomics are lacking, creating a bottleneck that hinders the recruitment and cultivation of a talented future mycological workforce. To address these issues, we developed Myco-Ed, an educational program offering training and scientific contributions through genome sequencing and analysis. Myco-Ed empowers students to pursue careers in fungal biology while improving fungal resources. Myco-Ed has been piloted at 12 institutions (15 classrooms) ranging from online e-Campuses to R1 universities, resulting in hundreds of fungal observations and many new high-quality reference genomes.
This paper deals with an exploratory study aimed at identifying the theoretical bases that sustain participative planning as described in the framework of Situational Strategic Planning, which are used in the integrated curriculum of undergraduate nursing education for the development of participative planning performance. Data were obtained through documentary analysis of twenty-two notebooks of the Educational Units that are part of the Marília Medical School Nursing Course curriculum, with a view to recognizing those parts of knowledge that contributed to the formation of the social actor, situation and social production concepts. Result analysis recognized the lack of theoretical bases, as well as the predominance of knowledge aims and the description of performance as objectives. However, attempts were revealed to integrate knowledge and approximate them to participative planning, with a view to achieving coherence with the principles of the integrated curriculum.
The core curriculum in the education of medical informaticians remains a topic of concern and discussion. This paper reports on a survey of medical informaticians with Master's level credentials that asked about computer science (CS) topics or skills that they need in their employment. All subjects were graduates or "near-graduates" of a single medical informatics Master's program that they entered with widely varying educational backgrounds. The survey instrument was validated for face and content validity prior to use. All survey items were rated as having some degree of importance in the work of these professionals, with retrieval and analysis of data from databases, database design and web technologies deemed most important. Least important were networking skills and object-oriented design and concepts. These results are consistent with other work done in the field and suggest that strong emphasis on technical skills, particularly databases, data analysis, web technologies, computer programming and general computer science are part of the core curriculum for medical informatics.
