Basic sciences in problem-based learning and conventional curricula: students' attitudes.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the attitudes toward basic sciences of students in a preclinical problem-based curriculum and a conventional lecture-based curriculum at the end of their second year of medical school. The results showed that the PBL class had more positive attitudes toward basic sciences than students in the conventional class. These results may reflect a learning environment where students meet many scientist role models as teachers and where basic science is learnt in the context of clinical problems.

Myco-Ed: Mycological curriculum for education and discovery.

Fungi are important and hyperdiverse organisms, yet chronically understudied. Most fungal clades have no reference genomes, impeding our understanding of their ecosystem functions and use as solutions in health and biotechnology. Also, opportunities for training in fungal biology and genomics are lacking, creating a bottleneck that hinders the recruitment and cultivation of a talented future mycological workforce. To address these issues, we developed Myco-Ed, an educational program offering training and scientific contributions through genome sequencing and analysis. Myco-Ed empowers students to pursue careers in fungal biology while improving fungal resources. Myco-Ed has been piloted at 12 institutions (15 classrooms) ranging from online e-Campuses to R1 universities, resulting in hundreds of fungal observations and many new high-quality reference genomes.

Integrating advanced practice and WOC nursing education.

The increased use of advanced practice nurses (APNs) in all health care settings provides new practice options for WOC nurses and new challenges for WOC nursing education. A number of WOC nurses are moving into APN roles, and APNs who are not WOC specialists are providing much of the primary care for patients with wounds, ostomies, and incontinence. New educational approaches are needed to prepare APNs for specialty practice in wound, ostomy, and/or continence care. In addition, the need exists to incorporate key WOC nursing content into the core curriculum for APNs who provide primary care for patients with or at risk for wounds or disordered elimination. This article explores potential strategies for meeting these new demands.

Undergraduate projects - do they have to be within the conventional medical environment?

OBJECTIVES: Undergraduate medical curricula now include increasing amounts of project work aimed at developing skills related to lifelong learning. One course allows students to choose from a wide range of projects, including 'conventional' hospital specialties and also from topics outside the mainstream of medicine. DESIGN: 'Conventional' and 'external' projects were compared in terms of the prior academic abilities of the students undertaking them, the assessment results and student and supervisor feedback, in order to consider whether the unconventional projects were equally valid within the undergraduate medical curriculum. SETTING: School of Medicine, University of Leeds, UK. SUBJECTS: Medical students. RESULTS: No difference between the assessment results of the student groups was present, with over 85% of all students reaching a standard of 'excellent' or 'good' in their overall final grade. There was no difference in prior academic abilities between the student groups. Enjoyment of modules was comparable between student groups ('conventional' 89%, 'external' 93%) with good levels of satisfaction with the quality of supervision. There were no differences in students' self-appraisal of generic skill acquisition. Students who had undertaken 'external' projects felt they had gained less experience in data-handling and problem-solving skills. However, 'external' projects were rated higher by students in terms of having realistic and achievable objectives, and the supervisors of these projects were also more realistic about time commitments involved in project supervision. CONCLUSIONS: 'External' modules were very popular, with over 45% of students requesting places which were available for fewer than 20% of students per year. Concerns regarding the appropriateness of self-directed undergraduate medical student projects outside the mainstream of medical practice were unfounded.
