Computer network for data acquisition, storage and analysis.

Abstract

Modern scientific instruments can produce huge quantities of data, usually in digital form. However, data acquisition is only one of three important functions. To be useful, data must also be stored and analyzed. Fortunately, the same computer-based technologies that facilitate the generation of large data-sets provide tools to accomplish these tasks. We describe a data system based on computers connected to a network, developed for this purpose.

Web servlet-assisted, dial-in flow cytometry data analysis.

BACKGROUND: The obvious benefits of centralized data storage notwithstanding, the size of modern flow cytometry data files discourages their transmission over commonly used telephone modem connections. The proposed solution is to install at the central location a web servlet that can extract compact data arrays, of a form dependent on the requested display type, from the stored files and transmit them to a remote client computer program for display. METHODS: A client program and a web servlet, both written in the Java programming language, were designed to communicate over standard network connections. The client program creates familiar numerical and graphical display types and allows the creation of gates from combinations of user-defined regions. Data compression techniques further reduce transmission times for data arrays that are already much smaller than the data file itself. RESULTS: For typical data files, network transmission times were reduced more than 700-fold for extraction of one-dimensional (1-D) histograms, between 18 and 120-fold for 2-D histograms, and 6-fold for color-coded dot plots. Numerous display formats are possible without further access to the data file. CONCLUSIONS: This scheme enables telephone modem access to centrally stored data without restricting flexibility of display format or preventing comparisons with locally stored files.

Integration of the digital imaging and communications in medicine standard into an oral and maxillofacial image management and communication system.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to provide developmental information about digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) support applications for an image management and communication system (IMACS). STUDY DESIGN: An oral and maxillofacial radiology IMACS that uses a proprietary image format was implemented in March 1997 in a general hospital dental clinic that supports more than 100 cubicles. DICOM was implemented into this system in 1998. RESULTS: In March 1997, the clinic directly began processing oral and maxillofacial radiographs with digital image acquisition devices or converted them into proprietary digital format with a film digitizer. The digital images could then be viewed at workstations in the 11 different divisions of the department. A DICOM module was implemented to convert proprietary images into DICOM in June 1998. After the release of DICOM Supplement 32 on a digital x-ray, DICOM was implemented into the oral and maxillofacial radiology IMACS with a DICOM server and browser in June 1999. We describe the steps we took to implement this system in our institution with a brief report on the evaluation of this system. CONCLUSION: We implemented a DICOM oral and maxillofacial IMACS that complies with the American College of Radiology and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association Standard DICOM, version 3.0. Most DICOM service classes and roles are supported.
